Systems and methods for spectrally broadening seed pulses with a single pass laser amplifier are disclosed. A bulk TM:II-VI polycrystalline material with combined gain and nonlinear characteristic provides passive (cold) spectral broadening of high power seed pulses. Continuous pumping provides more significant spectral broadening. In particular, pumping of TM:II-VI polycrystalline material (e.g. Cr2+:ZnS, Cr2+:ZnSe, and Cr2+:CdSe) is shown to provide significant spectral broadening to the super continuum generation SCG level. Pulse picking, pump sources, master oscillators and various optical components are described.

A laser for generating an output wavelength of approximately 193.4 nm includes a fundamental laser, an optical parametric generator, a fourth harmonic generator, and a frequency mixing module. The optical parametric generator, which is coupled to the fundamental laser, can generate a down-converted signal. The fourth harmonic generator, which may be coupled to the optical parametric generator or the fundamental laser, can generate a fourth harmonic. The frequency mixing module, which is coupled to the optical parametric generator and the fourth harmonic generator, can generate a laser output at a frequency equal to a sum of the fourth harmonic and twice a frequency of the down-converted signal.

It is an objective of the present invention to provide a phase sensitive amplifier that can be used for an optical communication and that can provide low-noise amplification. The phase sensitive amplifier according to the present invention is a phase sensitive amplifier that uses the optical mixing using a nonlinear optical effect to amplify the signal light. The phase sensitive amplifier according to the present invention includes: the first second-order nonlinear optical element (602-1); and the second second-order nonlinear optical element (602-2). The first second-order nonlinear optical element (602-1) causes the fundamental wave light (621) to generate second harmonic light (622) used as pump light. A filter (606-1) is provided that spectrally separates only the second harmonic light from the fundamental wave light and the second harmonic light. The second second-order nonlinear optical element (602-2) includes a multiplexer (606-2) to multiplex the signal light with the second harmonic light. The multiplexed signal light and second harmonic light are used subjected to parametric amplification. A filter (606-3) is provided that spectrally separates only the amplified signal light from the second harmonic light and the amplified signal light.
