The invention relates to a method for operating an installation, this installation having at least one line composed of line sections, vehicles being able to move along this line and comprising an electronic circuit for influencing at least the speed of the vehicle. Codings are placed along the line, and the vehicle has at least one sensor, particularly for detecting the codings, this sensor being connected to the electronic circuit. An exchange of data ensues between one or more vehicles and at least one stationary unit. The method comprises the following steps: at least when putting into service, a table is loaded into the electronic circuit of the vehicle; the following steps are repeated in time intervals: i) the information concerning the coding is detected and is supplied to the electronic circuit of the vehicle; ii) in the detected information, by using the table, the line section is determined in which the vehicle is located; iii) a message is received from a stationary unit, this message being composed of message parts each assigned to line sections; iv) the message part that is assigned to the identified line section is used, and the commands contained therein are executed; v) the message part that is assigned to an adjacent line section, particularly the one that is reached next after precalculation, is stored; vi) the information concerning the coding is repeatedly detected and is supplied to the electronic circuit of the vehicle; vii) the detected information is determined by means of the line section in which the vehicle is located; viii) in the event the adjacent line section has been reached, the information now assigned to the new line section, such as commands, are executed, and; ix) points iii) to ix) are repeated numerous times.
