The present invention relates to a magnetically recorded data reproduction apparatus which reproduces magnetically recorded data using a magnetoresistive head and method thereof. In this invention the recorded data are reproduced by a magnetoresistive head 2 and supplied to a reproduction amplifier 4. The signal from the reproduction amplifier 4 is then supplied to a high-pass filter 5 and a frequency component of, for example, 1 MHz or lower, is cut off. The signal from the HPF 5 is supplied to an integrating equalizer 6, a phase equalizer 7 and an analog cosine equalizer 8. The signal from the equalizer 8 is supplied to an AGC amplifier 10 through a low-frequency component correction circuit 9. The signal from the AGC amplifier 10 is supplied to an A/D converter 11. Further, the signal from the AGC amplifier 10 is supplied to the digital PLL circuit 12 and the extracted clock signal is supplied to the A/D converter 11. The digitized signal is then supplied to, for example, a Viterbi decoder 13 and the decoded signal is obtained at an output terminal 14. Thus, the effect of noise due to the so-called thermal asperity (TA noise) is removed, thereby preventing increases in the error rate of the reproduction signals due to the effect of TA noise and the occurrence of problems in equipment.

An apparatus that compensates for the asymmetry and the baseline shift in the signal generated by a magnetoresistive head. The apparatus stores a first correction factor for the baseline shift, a second correction factor for correcting the amplitude of positive portion of the signal and a third correction factor for correcting the amplitude of negative portion of the signal. The first correction factor for correcting for baseline shift is added to the signal generated by the magnetoresistive head to generate a baseline corrected signal. The baseline corrected signal is then monitored for positive and negative excursion from the baseline and the positive excursions are multiplied by the second correction factor and the negative excursions are multiplied by the third correction factor for generating a compensated signal.

A method and apparatus for creating a position error signal (PES) voltage v. track distance curve for the head (20) of a hard disk drive (10). The disk (12) has a dedicated track which contains a plurality of servo bits (34) that allow the head to be centered with the centerline of the track. The dedicated track also has a number of calibration bits (50-60) each embedded at a known location off-set from the track centerline. The PES voltage v. track distance curve is generated by reading each calibration bit and storing the corresponding amplitude of the position error signal in a memory device of the disk drive. Each calibration bit is located from the track centerline a distance that is different from the other calibration bits so that there are provided multiple points on the track curve.

An equalizer (100) is suitable for removing the delay distortion from a switched digital signal received from a telephone channel where the delay distortion is caused by a bridge-tap connected to the telephone channel. The equalizer includes a feedback delay circuit (200) which is arranged to delay the output signal (150) by an amount of time based on the square of the predominant frequency of the output signal. The resulting delayed feedback signal (130) is then combined with the input signal, thereby compensating for the delay distortion. The equalizer also includes an amplifier (103) which may be adjusted to compensate to the attenuation distortion caused by the bridge tap.

A device for recording an information signal on a magnetic record carrier comprises a recording amplifier (3), a magnetic head (4), and means for controlling the write current amplitude in dependence on temperature variations which occur during recording. This is effected by means of a temperature detector. The magnetic head (4) has a write section (5) for recording an information signal on the magnetic record carrier in a recording mode of the device, and a read section (6) for reading an information signal from the record carrier in a playback mode of the device. The read section (6) is of the magneto-resistive type. The temperature detector is formed by the read section.
