A cold-cathode electron source of both high frequency and high output, a microwave tube using the same, and its manufacturing method are disclosed. An emitter (24) of the cold-cathode electron source has a sharp point so that the aspect ratio R may be 4 or more. As a result, the capacitance between the emitter (24) and a gate electrode (16) is small correspondingly to the distance from the gate electrode (16). Therefore, the cold-cathode electrons can behave in response to a high frequency. The material of the cathode of this cold-cathode electron source is diamond having a high melting point and a high thermal conductivity, not a conventional material such as tungsten or silicon. Even if the density of the current flowing through the emitter (24) is high, the emitter (24) hardly melts, and consequently the cold-cathode electron source can be adapted to high output.

The element providing for primary emission consists of at least one flat disk (3) of an ultrathin foil of a refractory metal with a central opening in it. The element providing for secondary emission consists of at least one cylindrical bushing (4) of an emission-active metal. The external diameter of the disk (3) is larger than that of the bushing (4) by a value within the range of 0.1 to 0.2 of the value of the interelectrode gap. The end faces of the neighbouring disk (3) and bushing (4) join each other. The invention, due to the creation of the electric field intensity needed for obtaining the autoelectronic emission sufficient for excitation of the magnetron, provides for the possibility of the instant start of the magnetron without the need for first heating the cathode.

Die Erfindung sieht hierzu vor, daß ein Außenleiter (1) zylinderförmig ausgebildet und in diesem ein Innenleiter (2) mittels einer Keramikabstützscheibe (3) koaxial angeordnet ist, und daß auf einer Stirnseite eine mit dem Außenleiter (1) und dem Innenleiter (2) verbundene Metallschicht (4) vorgesehen ist, die mit einer Elektronen emittierenden Oxidschicht (5) versehen ist.
