PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery that offers a high capacity, excellent thermal stability, and excellent characteristics in normal-temperature cycles, high-temperature cycles, and high-temperature storage, and a lithium secondary battery including the positive electrode active material.SOLUTION: The positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery includes a core portion that contains a lithium complex metal oxide selected from a compound represented by the formula 1: LiMO, where M represents one or more kinds of transition metals and 1≤x≤1.1, a compound represented by the formula 2: yLiMnO(1-y)LiM'O, where M' represents one or more kinds of transition metals and 0≤y≤1, and combinations of the compounds; and a shell portion that contains lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO). The content of the lithium iron phosphate is in the range of about 5 wt.% to about 15 wt.% with respect to the total weight of the positive electrode active material.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide opacifying particles and to provide compositions containing the same.SOLUTION: An opacifying particle includes a pigment particle having an average particle diameter of from 0.15 micron to 1.0 micron and a refractive index of at least 1.8, the pigment particle being at least partially encapsulated in a polymeric shell having a calculated thickness of from 35 nm to 200 nm, wherein: the polymeric shell includes at least a first polymer phase and a second polymer phase; the first polymer is substantially in contact with the surface of the pigment particle providing a calculated shell thickness of at least 25 mm; and the first polymer has a refractive index less than the refractive index of the second polymer by at least 0.03 units.
