The invention relates to a method and a device for extending the furnace campaign by avoiding cracks in the stones and the chipping of parts of the stones, and reducing joints in melting furnaces. Said aim is achieved by a measurement of the forces/pressures/moments of the furnace stones occurring against each other, or of the furnace stones against the bracing and defined necessary counter forces, such that the forces between the stones, or between the bracings and the stones are below the maximum permissible compression (pressure force) of the stones, and the forces required for avoiding joints between the stones are ensured. Said process occurs automatically as a form of control by determining the force of sensors, analysis of processors and data, and activation of actuators for generating counter forces.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a stable state of molten metal in an arc furnace by detecting a change of state of an iron source supplied into the furnace when continuously supplying the iron source into the arc furnace and melting it. SOLUTION: The arc melting facility 22 includes a melting chamber 1 melting the iron source 20 by arc discharge generated from an electrode 2, and an iron source supply device 8 continuously supplying the iron source into the melting chamber. The arc melting facility 22 includes state change detection parts 12a, 12b, 12c detecting a state change of the melting chamber when generating the arc discharge from the electrode, and a controller 6 adjusting a supply speed of when supplying the iron source into the melting chamber by the iron source supply device on the basis of detection results of the state change detection parts. PURPOSE:To melt the whole scrap in a short time without eroding the refractory material in an arc furnace in the stage of melting the scrap in the arc furnace by rotating the furnace body. CONSTITUTION:Scrap 64 which is a raw material for making steel is charged into an arc furnace, and 3 pieces of graphite electrodes 40 are suspended from above, and the arcs by large electric power are generated between the electrodes and the scrap 64, thereby melting the scrap. The scrap near the three electrodes 40 is first melted in this case, and the scrap 64 between the electrodes remains unmolten. As the scrap near the electrodes melts, the inside wall of the furnace near the molten scrap is heated and the temp. of the cooling water in cooling tanks 50b, 50d, 50f in said position rises. Said temp. is detected with a temp. sensor 56, and is fed to a discrimination circuit 58 which emits a starting signal SD to drive a motor for rotating the furnace body, thereby rotating the furnace body 30 deg. either to the left or right in a horizontal direction. The unmolten scrap is made near the three electrodes and is melted by large electric power. The entire scrap is thus melted in a short time without eroding the inside wall of the furnace.
