    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for directly measuring a clearance between a rotary tool in rotation and a workpiece.SOLUTION: Pulsed laser light having a width exceeding the clearance between the rotary tool and the workpiece arranged opposite to each other is generated to irradiate the clearance while tilting the optical axis of the generated laser light to a plane to be processed. The pulsed laser light has oscillation pulse cycles of one pulse per one rotation or integral rotations of the rotary tool, and irradiates the same angle range of the rotary tool during an oscillation-pulse ON period. Light irradiating the clearance and diffracted without being cut off by the clearance is detected by a light receiving sensor to measure the clearance length.
