摘要: The present invention provides optical integrated circuits in which both a light function zone and a light reception zone are monolithically formed on the same substrate to obtain high reliability and low noise and loss. The optical integrated circuits according to the present invention have improved electrode structure formed on a light wave guide layer to apply a major portion of the electric field generated by the current flowing in the electrode structure within the light wave guide layer to thus improve light receiving sensitivity. Further, the optical integrated circuits according to the present invention have the light reception zone of the large photoconductive effect on the substrate to develop a light receiving sensitivity to the light function zone without affecting propagation loss.

摘要: A method and apparatus for detecting a frequency change of a light modulates the scattered light from the object of measurement using an acousto-optic modulator or the like, heterodyne-detects the scattered light after modulation to provide an electrical signal having a frequency (f.sub.d -f.sub.m) which is the difference between the Doppler frequency f.sub.d and the modulation frequency f.sub.m, passes this electrical signal to a filter while changing the modulation frequency f.sub.m, and obtains the modulation frequency f.sub.m at which the signal voltage is the largest or the smallest, that is, the Doppler frequency f.sub.d.

摘要: A process for making a diffraction grating pattern on a substrate is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of coating the substrate with first and second materials, with one of the materials defining a selected area for the diffraction grating pattern, and the other material covering the substrate while forming a window at that portion of the substrate where the diffraction grating is desired. The window portion of the substrate is then etched, and the first and second materials are stripped off in order to leave behind the diffraction grating pattern at the desired location of the substrate.

摘要: An integrated optic circuit according to the present invention is produced as a hybrid integrated optic circuit using two or more kinds of substrates in which only the portion of high performance and high degree of integration is formed of the substrate of a material of high cost and high performance while the other portion of lower degree of integration is formed of the substrate of a material of low cost. Therefore, in the integrated optic circuit according to the present invention, the distance between the waveguides to be coupled with optical fibers can be larger than the outside diameter of the optical fiber, and the integrated optic circuit according to the present invention can be produced easily at low cost.

摘要: A method for making a diffraction grating utilizing a laser source, a beam splitter to split the light from the laser source into two light fluxes, a collimator to convert each light flux into a light flux which is parallel and enlarged in diameter, a mirror to irradiate each light flux on a substrate coated with a photoresist, and a photomask on the photoresist. The use of an intermediate mask and focusing leans enables the formation of a diffraction grating within a limited area. A blazed diffraction grating may be formed by splitting a laser beam into two beams having an increased beam radius, and irradiating a light-sensitive material with the resulting two beams to form an interference fringe. This method is characterized in that in a first exposure the two beams are incident on the light sensitive material through air to form an interference fringe having a clearance width of d, and in a second exposure, the two beams are irradiated on the light sensitive material through a symmetrical transparent member having an isosceles triangular cross section in such a manner that the origin coincides to form an interference fringe having a clearance width of d/2, and furthermore, in that the ratio of the first exposure energy to the second exposure energy is made equal to the ratio of the first term to the second term of a Fourier series obtained by expanding the periodical function of the waveform of the blazed diffraction grating.

摘要: A light modulation device according to the present invention comprises a substrate, a substrate layer, an optical waveguide layer, and buffer layers, in the order from the bottom upward, all formed of either n-type or p-type compound semiconductor crystal. In this light modulation device, in order to capture the light in the optical waveguide layer, the composition ratio of the compound semiconductor is so determined that refractive index is at least approximately 0.1% higher in the optical waveguide layer than in the substrate layer and in the buffer layers. Further, the carrier density is low in the optical waveguide layer and in the buffer layers so that the applied voltage is applied mainly to the optical waveguide layer. Because of such construction, the light modulation device according to the present invention is free from strict conditions required in an etching process, is small in absorption loss of light, and can be used as a component of monolithic optical integrated circuit.
