    Abstract: A carbon fiber element comprising a carbon fiber to which a coating is applied that reduces its thermal coefficient of resistivity (TCR) can be included in a fiber reinforced structural component to improve sensing of strain therein by reducing errors arising from temperature variations. A method thereof includes providing, embedded within the structural component, at least one carbon fiber extending across a principle plane of the structural component, the carbon fiber being uniformly coated along its entire length with an electrically conductive material, the coating having a resistance that is equal to the carbon fiber and a TCR that is equal but opposite to the carbon fiber. The strain in the structural component is then determined by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of the carbon fiber element.

    Abstract: The invention relates to improved structural health monitoring, particularly to structural health monitoring of fibre reinforced polymer composites, more particularly at bonded joints and methods thereof. There is provided a method of structural health monitoring a composite structure (12), wherein said structure (12) comprises at least one non-reinforcing thermal element (18), such as electrically conductive fibres, comprising the steps of applying a stimulus to cause heating of said thermal element (18), removing the stimulus, and measuring the electrical resistance of said element (18) as a function of time, to provide a thermal decay profile (41, 42) indicating whether damage has occured in the composite structure (12).

    Abstract: A method of sensing strain in a structural component, the method comprising the steps of providing, embedded within said structural component, at least one carbon fibre element (10) coated with an electrically conductive material (12), measuring the electrical resistance of said coated carbon fibre element and determining strain in respect of said carbon fibre element based on changes in said electrical resistance thereof. A method of manufacturing a carbon fibre element, a carbon fibre element so manufactured, and a carbon fibre reinforced structural component including such a carbon fibre element are also disclosed.
