Abstract: An electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions includes a positive electrode that includes a positive electroactive material, a negative electrode that includes a negative electroactive material, and a free-standing separating layer disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The free-standing separating layer includes a gel membrane that includes a polymer host and a liquid electrolyte and an integrated structural component disposed within the gel membrane. The integrated structural component may be selected from the group consisting of: a plurality of solid-state electrolyte particles, a nonwoven material, and a combination thereof.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a solid-state battery including at least one current collector that is in communication with one or more switches configured to move between open and closed positions, where the open position corresponds to a first operational state of the solid-state battery and the closed position corresponds to a second operational state of the solid-state battery; one or more electrodes disposed adjacent to the one or more current collectors; and one or more electrothermal material foils including a resistor material that is in electrical communication with that at least one current collector, where in the first operational state electrons may flow through the one or more electrothermal material foils during cycling of the solid-state battery so as to initiate a heating mode, and in the second operational state electrons may flow through the current collector during cycling of the solid-state battery so as to initiate a non-heating mode.

Abstract: A method for forming a bipolar solid-state battery includes preparing a mixture of gel precursor solution and solid electrolyte. The gel precursor includes a polymer, a first solvent, and a liquid electrolyte. The liquid electrolyte includes a second solvent, a lithium salt, and electrolyte additive. The method includes loading the mixture onto at least one of a first electrode, a second electrode, and a third electrode. Each of the first, second, and third electrodes includes a plurality of solid-state electroactive particles. The method includes removing at least a portion of the first solvent from the mixture to form a gel and positioning one of the first, second, and third electrodes with respect to another of the first, second, and third electrodes. The method includes applying a polymer blocker to a border of the first, second, or third electrodes.

Abstract: A bipolar battery system includes N battery cells. Each of the N battery cells comprises M cores each comprising a first current collector, cathode active material, a separator, anode active material, and a second current collector, where M is an integer greater than one. The M cores are connected in parallel by connecting the first current collectors of the M cores in each of the N battery cells together and by connecting the second current collectors of the M cores in each of the N battery cells together. N-1 clad plates are arranged between adjacent ones of the N battery cells and the N battery cells are connected in series by the N-1 clad plates. A voltage sensing system connects to the N-1 tabs, a first terminal, and a second terminal and is configured to determine N voltages across the N battery cells, respectively.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a modified binder for use in an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions. The modified binder includes one or more agglomerates of polytetrafluoroethylene nanoparticles, where each of the polytetrafluoroethylene nanoparticles includes a polytetrafluoroethylene core and a polymeric shell that is disposed on exposed surfaces of the core. The polymeric shell can include a polymer selected from the group consisting of: polyethylene oxide, polyglycidyl methacrylate, polyvinylidene difluoride, fluoride-hexafluoropropylene, polypropylene oxide, polyacrylonitrile, polymethacrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate, derivatives and co-polymers, and combinations thereof, and in certain instances, also a humidity tolerant lithium salt. The polytetrafluoroethylene core can have a first particle size ranging from about 10 nanometers to about 500 nanometers, the polymeric shell can have an average thickness ranging from about 10 nanometers to about 1,000 nanometers, and each of the one or more agglomerates can have an average size ranging from about 100 micrometers about 1,000 micrometers.

Abstract: A bipolar battery includes N battery cores each comprising a cathode electrode, an anode electrode, and a separator, where N is an integer greater than one. N−1 bipolar plates include a first layer made of a first material, a second layer made of a second material, a center portion, and first and second sides extending transversely relative to the center portion. A battery enclosure including a cover and a lower portion including sides defining a cavity. The N−1 bipolar plates are arranged in the cavity between adjacent ones of the N battery cores and the N battery cores are connected in series by the N−1 bipolar plates. The first and second sides of the N−1 bipolar plates are one of inserted into “L”-shaped slots in the sides of the lower portion, and molded into the sides of the lower portion.

Abstract: A polymer gel electrolyte for an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions is provided. Further, one or more plasticizers are included selected from the group consisting of: ethylene carbonate (EC), diethylene carbonate (DEC), vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC), dimethylene carbonate (DMC), ethylmethylene carbonate (EMC), propylene carbonate (PC), gamma butyrolactone (GBL), diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (Diglyme), triethylene glycol dimethyl ether (Triglyme), tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (Tetraglyme), Triethyl Phosphate (TEP), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMIM-TFSI), 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMI-TFSI), alkyl pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PY-TFSI), piperidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PP-TFSI), N-alkyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PYRA-TFSI), and combinations thereof. The polymer gel electrolyte also includes one or more lithium salts.
