摘要: The specification describes methods for the manufacture of very large optical fiber preforms wherein the core material is produced by MCVD. Previous limitations on preform size inherent in having the MCVD starting tube as part of the preform process are eliminated by removing the MCVD starting tube material from the collapsed MCVD rod by etching or mechanical grinding. Doped overcladding tubes are used to provide the outer segments of the refractive index profile thus making most effective use of the MCVD produced glass and allowing the production of significantly larger MCVD preforms than previously possible.

摘要: An isothermal, low pressure-based process of depositing material within a substrate has been developed and results in creating an extremely narrow reaction zone within which a more uniform and efficient deposition will occur. Sets of isothermal plasma operating conditions have been found that create a narrow deposition zone, assuring that the deposited material is clear glass rather than soot particles. The chemical delivery system, in one arrangement, utilizes rods of solid phase source material (which may otherwise be difficult to obtain in gaseous form). The operating conditions are selected such that the hot plasma does not transfer a substantial amount of heat to the substrate tube, where the presence of such heat has been found to result in vaporizing the reactant material (creating soot) and developing hot spots.

摘要: A pilot's flight desk for use in aircraft as disclosed. The flight desk provides a planar desk surface supported above the aircraft floor by an upright support attached leg to a base plate which is clamped to the aircraft seat rails. The desk surface swivels and pivots with respect to the upright support and the upright support is pivotally attached to the base plate, thereby allowing for the compact folding of the pilot flight desk. A cup holder and swivel mounted pen light attached to the desk surface is also disclosed.

摘要: Associative matrix compression methods, systems, computer program products and data structures compress an association matrix that contains counts that indicate associations among pairs of attributes. Selective bit plane representations of those selected segments of the association matrix that have at least one count is performed, to allow compression. More specifically, a set of segments is generated, a respective one of which defines a subset, greater than one, of the pairs of attributes. Selective identifications of those segments that have at least one count are stored. The at least one count that is associated with a respective identified segment is also stored as at least one bit plane representation. The at least one bit plane representation identifies a value of the at least one associated count for a bit position of the count that corresponds to the associated bit plane.

摘要: A rapid method for the quantitation of various live cell types is described. The method may include a variety of steps including: 1) suspending the cells in a detergent-like compound, 2) isolating the washed cells by centrifugation or filtration, 3) resuspending the cells in a solution that contains a preservative, a fluorescent dye and a compound such as dequalinium which can be taken up by the cells, 4) measuring the fluorescence increase over time of the cell-dye mixture with a simple fluorometer, and 5) measuring the native fluorescence of the cells. This new cell fluorescence method correlates with other methods of enumerating cells such as the standard plate count, the methylene blue method and the slide viability technique. The method is particularly useful in several applications such as: a) quantitating bacteria in milk, yogurt, cheese, meat and other foods, b) quantitating yeast cells in brewing, fermentation and bread making, c) quantitating mammalian cells in research, food and clinical settings. The method is especially useful when both total and viable cell counts are required such as in the brewing industry. The method can also be employed to determine the metabolic activity of cells in a sample. The apparatus, device, and/or system used for cell quantitation is also disclosed.
