A microorganism strain Lactobacillus plantarum Inducia DSM 21379 for use as hypocholesterolemic, antimicrobial and anti-oxidative agent and as enhancer of the natural defense potential of a subject. L. plantarum Inducia is used for reducing the level of LDL-cholesterol in blood for preventing the cholesterol metabolism disorders and cardiovascular disorders. L. plantarum Inducia enhances simultaneously the natural defense potential and cellular immunity, and as anti-oxidative agent enhances anti-oxidative activity of blood by reducing the level of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). The strain is also used as an antimicrobial agent for lowering risk of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) by preventing germination of C. difficile spores and by suppressing proliferation of its vegetative cells. The compositions comprising L. plantarum Inducia decrease the levels of LDL-cholesterol and ox-LDL in blood, enhance the natural defense potential and lower risk of CDAD. The composition may further comprise xylitol.

The present invention relates to a microorganism Lactobacillus plantarum strain Inducia DSM 21379 as probiotic, its functional properties, food product (e.g. cheese) and composition comprising said microorganism and use of said microorganism for production of medicine for enhancing cellular immunity. L. plantarum Inducia produces polyamines from ornithine and glutamate, nitric mono-oxide (NO) from arginine, possesses antioxidative activity and with produced polyamines, nitric mono-oxide and antioxidative compounds improves the intestinal barrier function, increases number of immunocytes in blood and induces cytokine production for enhancement of organisms' natural defense.

The strain of micro-organism Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 is a novel anti-microbial and anti-oxidative probiotic. It has a high anti-microbial effect on Escherichia coli, Shigella sonnei, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, and moderate activity against Helicobacter pylori strains. The strain of micro-organism possesses Mn-superoxide dismutase and both its lysates and intact cells have high anti-oxidative activity, increasing the glutathione red-ox ratio in blood sera and able to capture toxic hydroxyl radicals. The strain of micro-organism could be used as a probiotic for the production of functional food (yoghurt, cheese) and non-comestibles (tablets, capsules) for the prophylaxis of intestinal and uroinfections, both for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, caused by prolonged oxidative stress.
