Abstract: A scratch tester has at least one cutter that moves simultaneously both rotationally and axially relative to the rock it is cutting. When rotational and axial movements are constant, the cutter generates a helical groove in the rock. In borehole embodiments, the scratch tester is fixed at a desired location using centralizers, and the cutter is provided on a motorized platform/track that translates between the centralizers and rotates around a central axis. The cutter faces outward and extends via a cutter arm to engage and carve a helical groove in the borehole wall. A laboratory scratch tester includes a holder for a solid cylindrical core sample and a motorized translating frame on which a cutter extends. The cutter is directed toward the core sample, and the holder with the core sample is rotated by a motor so that as the cutter translates relative thereto, a helical groove is cut thereinto.

Abstract: A system is described for evaluating coagulation of particles in a downhole fluid-particle mixture based on dielectric measurements. An example downhole treatment is one in which flocs are used to plug a high-permeability subterranean formation zone as part of a stimulation procedure. An injection tube is positioned within the wellbore to the high-permeability zone. An instrumented section of tubing includes one or more dielectric probes that are positioned and configured to make dielectric measurements of the particle-fluid mixture flowing in the tubing or in the annulus. The downhole dielectric measurements are used to indicate whether or not the particle-fluid mixture has the desired structural properties. An operator on the surface can make adjustments in real-time according to the received dielectric measurements.

Abstract: An emulsion is mixed with fibers while the emulsion is moving through a surface tubing using a venturi. The fiber/emulsion mixture is injected into a pressurized tank and the pressurized fiber/emulsion mixture is injected from the pressurized tank into a desired location in a wellbore. Pumps and pressure boosters may be used to move the fluid. Alternatively, an emulsion and a fiber suspension is provided and a first downhole tubing disposed in a wellbore conveys the emulsion downhole while a second downhole tubing disposed in the wellbore and circumferentially enclosing all or part of the first downhole tubing conveys the fiber suspension downhole. The first downhole tubing has nozzles through which the emulsion passes into the second downhole tubing and the emulsion and the fiber suspension mix. The mixture exits the second downhole tubing through ports at a desired location in the wellbore.

Abstract: A measurement tool having one or more measurement cells disposed in a fluid flow path is provided. Measurements are made in each of the measurement cells and a fluid type is identified based on the outcome of the measurements. A numerical value is associated with each measurement cell based on the identified fluid type, and a total fractional volume of the identified fluids is determined using the associated numerical values. There may be a relatively large number of measurement cells distributed so as to substantially cover the cross-sectional area of the flow path, relatively few measurement cells distributed randomly in fixed locations in the flow path, or a single measurement cell moveably located in the flow path. The measurement cells measure a property such as resistivity, capacitance, dielectric constant, or electrical impedance. The total fractional volumes of the identified fluids may be determined using a statistic.
