Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for managing carriers on which a wireless communication system serves a UE over an established radio-link-layer connection. As disclosed, a base station serves the UE with carrier aggregation service using (i) a first carrier as a primary carrier for the UE and (ii) a second carrier as a secondary carrier for the UE. While serving the UE, the system determines that the base station should serve the UE with the carrier aggregation service using (i) the first carrier as the secondary carrier and (ii) the second carrier as the primary carrier. In response to the determination and while maintaining the established radio-link-layer connection with the UE, the system causes the base station to serve the UE with the carrier aggregation service using (i) the first carrier as the secondary carrier and (ii) the second carrier as the primary carrier.

Abstract: A method and system for dynamically reconfiguring an air interface that defines a continuum of frames each divided into a sequence of transmission time intervals (TTIs). The air interface is initially configured according to a first radio access technology (RAT). The base station then detects that at least a threshold extent of wireless client devices (WCDs) served by the base station on the air interface support operation according to a second RAT. And in response, the base station reconfigures the air interface so that certain TTIs per frame instead operate on a second RAT, with the remaining TTIs per frame still operating on the first RAT. The base station then serves WCDs that support the second RAT in the TTIs now configured according to the second RAT, while continuing to serve other WCDs according to the first RAT in the remaining TTIs configured according to the first RAT.

Abstract: An example embodiment may involve receiving an attach request related to a WCD. It may be determined that the WCD already has an established bearer session with a first PGW device. Possibly in response to receiving the attach request from the WCD and the WCD already having the established bearer session with the first PGW device, a request for PGW device assignment may be transmitted to a server device. A response from the server device may be received, where the response may indicate assignment of a second PGW device. A create session request may be transmitted to an SGW device. Reception of the create session request may cause the SGW device to establish, for the WCD, a new bearer session to the second PGW device. Establishment of the new bearer session may involve the second PGW device retrieving, from the first PGW device, context information related to the WCD.

Abstract: A method and system for improved management of UE service. A base station will predict that its air interface will become threshold highly loaded. And, in response to that prediction but before the predicted threshold high load occurs, the base station will proactively manage service of UEs based on a prediction of how much each UE would suffer from bearer loss if and when the predicted threshold high load occurs. For instance, the base station may predict for each UE a level of service degradation based on service value of each bearer, if any, that the UE would lose if the threshold high load occurs. And the base station may take proactive action, such as triggering a handover and/or providing an alert message, with respect to each UE whose predicted level of service degradation is threshold high.

Abstract: A user, identified by a network access identifier (NAI) or other user identifier, uses a communication device, identified by a hostname or other device identifier. An Internet Protocol (IP) address is obtained for the communication device, e.g., when the user logs in for access to a packet-switched network. An association between the IP address and the hostname is registered in a domain name server. An association between the user identifier and the hostname is registered in an RWHOIS server. An application may query the RWHOIS server to determine the hostname of the communication device being used by the user and then query the domain name server to determine the IP address of the communication device.

Abstract: A method and corresponding system to help facilitate the application of service policy rules for client devices while reducing the amount of signaling between network entities is disclosed. In accordance with one example, the wireless network may evaluate the extent to which the service policy rules defined by the UE's service profile have been applied by the wireless network. Based on this evaluating, the network may identify a subset of service policy rules that have been applied to greater than a threshold extent by the network for the given UE. And in response to this identifying, the network may cause the PDP to provision the PEP, with the subset of service policy rules, rather than provision the PEP with every possible service policy rule. As a result, the PDP and PEP may refrain from engaging in excess signaling, and the wireless network, in turn, may enjoy reduced congestion.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for admitting new participants to an ongoing conference session. In one example, a conference server hosting a conference session may receive a request for a UE to join the ongoing conference session. In response to receiving such a request, the conference server may determine whether to admit the UE to the ongoing conference session as a full participant or as a partial participant. When the conference server determines to admit the UE as a full participant, the conference server establishes a conference leg with the UE and permits the UE to communicate with each and every current participant of the ongoing conference session. However, when the conference server determines to admit the UE as a partial participant, the conference server may establish a conference leg with the UE and may permit the UE to communicate with just some of the ongoing conference's current participants.

Abstract: An Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network uses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to provide communication services to mobile nodes. A short message service gateway (SMS-GW) in the IMS network receives a request to deliver a message to a mobile node. The SMS-GW determines whether the mobile node is IMS registered. If the mobile node is IMS registered, the SMS-GW may transmit a SIP MESSAGE request to a call session control function (CSCF) serving the mobile node in order to deliver the message to the mobile node. If the mobile node is SIP-capable but is not IMS registered, the SMS-GW may instead transmit a SIP MESSAGE request to the mobile node's IP address. To obtain the mobile node's IP address, the SMS-GW may query a domain name server (DNS) that stores associations between hostnames and IP addresses of mobile nodes.
