摘要: An apparatus and method are provided for evaluating the backface signature of flat panel ballistic resistant composites with accuracy, repeatability and improved correlation to the expected backface signature of shaped ballistic resistant composites in actual field use. The apparatus separates the composite from a clay backing material with a suitable spacer so that the bulk of the backface deformation is inside an air gap space with minimal clay disturbance, thereby eliminating conventional testing error and producing an accurate test result.

摘要: A helmet shell is formed having an outer section of fibrous layers, a middle section of fibrous layers and an inner section of fibrous layers. The outer section layers contain high tenacity abrasive fibers in a resin matrix. The middle section layers contain high strength polyolefin fibers and are in the form of woven or knitted fabrics with a resin matrix. The inner section layers contain high strength polyolefin fibers and are in the form of non-woven fabrics with a resin matrix. The helmet is lightweight and resists penetration of rifle bullets.

摘要: A ballistic resistant composite material useful in rigid armor applications. The composite material includes at least one consolidated network of high tenacity fibers in a thermoplastic matrix material. The resin is a thermoplastic polyurethane resin that is semi-crystalline at room temperature. The high tenacity fibers have a tenacity of at least about 7 g/d. Prior to consolidation the polyurethane resin matrix material is in an aqueous medium. When dry, the polyurethane matrix material has a tensile modulus (at 100% elongation) of at least about 500 psi (3.45 MPa), a tensile modulus (at 300% elongation) of at least about 500 psi (3.45 MPa), and an ultimate tensile strength of at least about 2000 psi (13.78 MPa). The ballistic resistant composite material has improved ballistic properties.

摘要: A method for applying multiple polymeric coatings onto a fibrous substrate. More particularly, a method for applying multiple polymeric coatings onto fibrous substrates without regard to chemical or physical incompatibilities of the polymeric coating materials. A first polymeric material is applied onto at least one fibrous substrate, and a second polymeric material is applied onto a support. The fibrous substrate and support are joined, contacting the first polymeric material with the second polymeric material, followed by separating the support from the fibrous substrate, such that at least a portion of the second polymeric material remains on the first polymeric material on the fibrous substrate.

摘要: A multilayered composite fabric which comprises (a) a first fabric comprising non-woven unidirectionally oriented fibers in a first resin matrix, the fibers comprising high tenacity fibers, the first fabric comprising first and second surfaces; and (b) a second fabric comprising multi-directionally oriented fibers optionally in a second resin matrix, the second fabric also comprising high tenacity fibers, the second fabric having first and second surfaces, the first surface of the second fabric being bonded to the second surface of the first fabric thereby forming the composite fabric. Also described is a method of making such fabric wherein the second fabric layer is used as a support during the manufacturing process and is thereafter consolidated into a single structure with the first fabric layer.

The hybrid structures are particularly useful for the formation of or for use in conjunction with soft, flexible body armor.
