A substituted diaryl compound or a mixture of substituted diaryl compounds, such as dimethylbiaryl compounds are isomerized by treatment with a strong acid or mixtures of strong acids in the absence of any additional catalyst. The strong acid or mixture of acids has a Hammett acidity of less than about −12.6. The isomerization reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, amount of acid, and amount of solvent can be adjusted to selectively produce desired isomers in high yields. One or more desired isomers may be produced in high yields by isomerization of substituted diaryl compounds and selectively removing one or more desired isomers from the resulting equilibrium mixture of isomers. The isomer mixture may be re-isomerized subsequent to selective removal of the desired isomer to produce additional amounts of desired isomer. The isomerization may be employed to substantially reduce the amount of at least one isomer substituted in the 2-position or to substantially increase the amount of at least one isomer substituted in at least the 3-position, the 4-position or the 4-position for the production of at least substantially linear or crystalline polymers.

This invention relates to conversion processes which take place in the presence of solid acid catalysts, e.g., hydrocarbon conversion processes. More specifically, this invention relates to a process for the alkylation of organic compounds, preferably aromatic and paraffinic hydrocarbons, with alkylating agents, e.g., alkyl chlorides, alkyl sulfonates, alkyl epoxides, alkynes, etc., in the presence of a polyfluorosulfonic acid catalyst. In one preferred embodiment of the instant process the selectivity to the monoalkylated reaction product of said organic compound and said alkylating agent is maximized by (1) refluxing a mixture comprising said compound and the alkylated derivative thereof, (2) separating from the mixture of step (1) an overhead product comprising said organic compound, said overhead product being substantially free from said alkylated derivatives, (3) condensing said overhead product, (4) contacting said condensed overhead product with said alkylating agent in the presence of a polyfluorosulfonic acid catalyst, at conditions whereby a portion of said organic compound is reacted to form the alkylated derivative thereof, and (5) returning the resultant mixture of the organic compound and its alkylated derivative to the refluxing mixture of step (1). Fresh organic compound may be continuously added to said refluxing mixture while continuously withdrawing said alkylated derivatives. Preferably said organic compound is benzene and said olefin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene and propylene.

This invention relates to oxyalkylations which take place in the presence of solid acid catalysts. More particularly this invention relates to increasing the selectivity of such processes employing a solid acid catalyst, preferably a polyfluorosulfonic acid catalyst, in which an hydroxylic compound reactant reacts with an alkylene oxide reactant to produce a desired mono-oxyalkylated product which tends to react with the alkylene oxide to produce an undesired second product. The improvement comprises the steps of (1) vaporizing the hydroxylic compound in a reflux zone, (2) passing vaporized hydroxylic compound through a catalyst zone to a condenser wherein vaporized hydroxylic compound is condensed, (3) returning condensed hydroxylic compound to the catalyst zone and in the catalyst zone contacting condensed hydroxylic compound with vaporized hydroxylic compound and the alkylene oxide in the presence of a solid insoluble acidic catalyst at reaction conditions whereby the desired mono-oxyalkylated derivative is formed, (4) passing reaction products and unreacted condensed hydroxylic compound to the reflux zone, and (5) recovering the mono-oxyalkylated derivative.

A solid fluorocarbon polymer containing pendant sulfonic acid groups and supported on a solid substrate is prepared using an intermediate which is either thermoplastic or soluble to a measurable extent in a solvent. The intermediate is formed into the desired shape and then the intermediate is converted as desired to the sulfonic acid form for use as a catalyst. A preferred embodiment is a solid polymeric acid catalyst consisting essentially of a thin film, less than 2 mils thick, of a solid perfluorocarbon polymer containing pendant acid groups and supported on the surface of a solid impermeable substrate such as a heat conductive metallic composition.

A process for the production of .beta.-isopropylnaphthalene in high regioselectivity (90-98%) by alkylation of naphthalene over solid or supported superacid catalysts, such as a perfluorinated alkanesulfonic acid of four to eighteen carbon atoms (C.sub.4 F.sub.9 SO.sub.3 H to C.sub.18 F.sub.37 SO.sub.3 H) or a polymeric perfluorinated resin-sulfonic acid, such as the acid form of the commercially available Nafion-K ion-membrane resin (DuPont). Further isomerization of mixtures of isomeric isopropylnaphthalenes to preferentially pure .beta.-isopropylnaphthalene can also be effected.
