Abstract:
A method and apparatus for improved control of continuous electric arc furnace steelmaking in which a charge velocity detector measures charge velocity of metallic charge introduced to the furnace. A charge mass detector measures a charge mass of metallic charge introduced to the furnace. A computer determines a feed rate based on the charge velocity and the charge mass. An automatic bath level probe detects a steel bath. The computer determines a steel bath level and optimal positions to insert a temperature probe and an oxygen lance, and further predicts new bath levels from one tapping time to the next tapping time. The temperature probe is inserted to an optimal measurement position based on the steel bath level and measures a steel bath temperature. The oxygen lance is positioned and maintained at an optimal oxygen injection position and injects oxygen into the bath.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for high-temperature precision sintering applications are disclosed wherein a flowable bed of a refractory particulate material is used to support an article during sintering to minimize distortions caused by shrinkage.
Abstract:
A turntable furnace for heating particulate material and which is particularly suited for the industrial production of litharge. The particulate material is heated inside the furnace on a turntable hearth and distributed radially outwardly from the center of the hearth to a discharge opening by a pair of water cooled screw augers. The rotational speed of the turntable hearth and the screw augers may be independently controlled to vary the amount of mixing and blending of the particulate material and to vary the length of time the particulate material is subjected to heat.
Abstract:
A method of controlling strip temperatures of two joined metal strips of dissimilar gauges but requiring essentially the same heat treatment temperatures, is described. The normal processing temperature is higher than the temperature to which it is desired to heat the webs. The higher processing temperature is reduced to a lower temperature in response to a change in the gauge of the webs passing through the chamber in which the webs are heat treated. This lower temperature is such that the heavier gauge web will not be underheated and the lighter gauge web will not be overheated. The line speed at which the juncture of the webs passes through the chamber will simultaneously be lowered in correlated relation to the reduction of the temperature within the heat treatment chamber until such time as the juncture passes from the chamber so that the processing conditions of time and temperature can be readjusted to accommodate heat treatment of the new web.
Abstract:
A heating method of operating a furnace in a hot rolling line and a heating furnace therefor in which the reheating furnace is positioned between a continuous casting apparatus and a rolling apparatus rolling workpieces at a higher speed than they are cast by the casting process, the furnace serving as a heating and buffer zone. The reheating furnace includes at least three moving beams each having an independent driving mechanism, and coupling mechanisms which couple the neighboring moving beams for independent or synchronous movement, while the moving beams are so arranged that, by operating the driving mechanism, they are altered in their speeds to the discharging speed of the workpieces from the continuous casting process, or one or two of the moving beams are brought into idling state or driven at the rolling speed.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus to provide closed loop control in a solar cell production system are disclosed. An example solar cell production system includes: a firing furnace comprising a plurality of zones and a belt configured to transport photovoltaic cells through a sequence of the plurality of zones, the zones comprising firing elements configured to fire a metallization layer of photovoltaic cells by heating ambient air in the zones to respective temperatures; a cooling chamber configured to cool the photovoltaic cells; a photovoltaic cell tester configured to measure a property of the photovoltaic cells after cooling of the photovoltaic cells in the cooling chamber; and control circuitry configured to control firing elements based on the property of the photovoltaic cells measured by the photovoltaic cell tester.
Abstract:
A device for heat treating metallic webs in-line, in particular for operation with a low-density protective gas, comprises stabilising nozzle systems which stabilise the course of the web and effect heat transfer, primarily by forced convection, in the heating portion and at least in the first portion of cooling. The web is guided in a non-contact process in the treatment portion localized by rollers. The course of the web exhibits a concave curvature (as viewed from above), at least in a partial area in the treatment portion. The area of said concave curvature can be in a fluid which is different from the fluid with which the web is blown in the heating portion and at least in the first portion of the cooling area.
