    Abstract: A device for retrieving snagged lures has a rigid loop of stiff rod or wire mounted on a pole. The loop is made up of several portions placed in the same plane with one another and connected to a support portion mounted in the pole. The loop has first and second portions that define an acute angle between them at a corner for reaching over and grasping a lure for pulling it upward. A crossover portion completing the loop extends over the first portion and provides a tip for engaging a line and guiding it through a gap and into the loop. Also disclosed is a weighted device which is not connected to a pole, but which includes a similar loop.

    Abstract: An material level monitoring and reporting system uses special micropower impulse radar level sensing probes, with one such probe being inserted into each of a plurality of material containment structures, such as storage tanks. The micropower impulse radar probes use flexible waveguides which extend downward to the tank bottom such that micropower radar impulses travel to and from the liquid surface via a wave guide, with the lapse between emission and reception of the impulse indicating a distance from the probe, and thus a liquid level. Each level sensing probe is connected to a communication link which collects level and status information from the level sensing probes and transmits it to a monitoring site. The material level data may be collected from a plurality of intermediate monitoring sites by a central monitoring sites.

    Abstract: Compounds termed "vitaletheine modulators" which include beta-alanyl-taurine and carbobenzoxy beta-alanyl-taurine are synthesized and added to culture media for in vitro culture of cells such as mammalian or plant cells. The compounds support cell vitality, and provide increased cellular life span, increased cellular bioproductivity, improved cellular function, and adaption of resistant cells to culturing. Carbobenzoxy beta-alanyl-taurine is produced by coupling .beta.-alanine, which has it's terminal amine protected with a carbobenzoxy (CBZ) group, to N-hydroxysuccinimide to produce an active ester of .beta.-alanine, coupling two of the active esters to cystamine to produce a CBZ-protected .beta.-alethine having an internal disulfide bond, isolating and purifying the CBZ-protected .beta.-alethine, and reacting the CBZ-protected .beta.-alethine with iodine to oxidize the disulfide bond to obtain carbobenzoxy beta-alanyl-taurine. Beta-alanyl-taurine is produced by the same procedure except that after oxidizing with iodine, the carbobenzoxy beta-alanyl-taurine is irradiated with UV radiation to remove the CBZ-protecting group.

    Abstract: A process for formulating a ruminant food ration in which the methionine needs of the ruminant are determined, a plurality of natural or synthetic feed ingredients and the nutrient composition of each of the ingredients are identified wherein one of the ingredients is 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid or a salt, amide or ester thereof, and a ration is formulated from the identified feed ingredients to meet the determined methionine needs of the ruminant which comprises one or more grains, a hydroxy analog of methionine, and optionally a bypass fat wherein (i) the hydroxy analog of methionine is selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid and the salts, amides and esters thereof, (ii) the hydroxy analog of methionine is added separately from any bypass fat which is included in the ration, and (iii) the ration is formulated on the basis that at least 20% of the hydroxy analog of methionine is assumed to be available for absorption by the ruminant.

    Abstract: A double-pass scanning monochromator for use in an optical spectrum analyzer includes an input optical fiber for emitting an input light beam, a diffraction grating for diffracting the input light beam to produce a spatially dispersed light beam, a slit for passing a selected portion of the dispersed light beam, a motor for rotating the diffraction grating, a shaft angle encoder for sensing grating position, and an output optical fiber. The light that passes through the slit is directed to the diffraction grating and is recombined by the diffraction grating to produce an output light beam. The light beam to be analyzed is incident on the diffraction grating during first and second passes. A polarization rotation device rotates the polarization components of the light beam by 90.degree. between the first and second passes so that the output of the monochromator is independent of the polarization of the input light beam. The output optical fiber is translated by a micropositioning assembly in a plane perpendicular to the output light beam during rotation of the diffraction grating to automatically track the output light beam and to provide optical chopping.
