In a radio access network, novel systems and methods reduce processing delay, and improve integration with IP networks, by separating user data from connection management and control data at a Node B or at a base station. The user data are routed to an IP (Internet Protocol) switch, whereas the connection management and control data are routed to a centralized radio network controller (RNC). Pursuant to a second embodiment of the invention, a centralized RNC provides improved radio resource management (RRM) functionality by handing all connection management and control data for a plurality of Node B's, thereby simplifying the switching of user data throughout the radio access network. Pursuant to a third embodiment of the invention, a smart IP switch is equipped to switch user data without core network (CN) involvement. Downlink user data are switched independently of uplink user data.

A method of making a thermally-conductive casing for an optical head in a disc player is provided. The method involves molding a polymer composition comprising: i) about 20% to about 80% by weight of a polymer matrix such as polyphenylene sulfide, and ii) about 20% to about 80% by weight of a thermally-conductive material such as carbon graphite into a casing for the optical head. A reinforcing material, such as glass, and other additives, such as flame retardants, can be incorporated into the polymer composition.

A multi-application IC card system is disclosed having selective application loading and deleting capability. Prior to loading an application onto an IC card a test is conducted to determine if the card is qualified to receive the application using personalization data stored on the card and comparing it with permissions data associated with the application indicating one or more sets of cards upon which the application may be loaded. If the personalization data of the card falls within the allowable set of permissions for that application then the card may be loaded with the application. Preferably, the personalization data includes data representative of the card number, issuer, a product class and the date on which the card is personalized.

A material machining system for machining a workpiece (PCB, PWB etc.) for drilling blind vias. The system includes a laser supply system (20, 26, 30) for supplying discrete machining beams (22a, 22b) that are separate from each other. A deflecting devices (28, 32) is provided for deflecting each of the discrete machining beams to generate multiple independent beams at a plurality of positions within a field of operation on the workpiece. A scan lens (34) having an entrance pupil configured to receive the multiple independent beams from the deflecting devices is provided proximate to the entrance pupil of the scan lens. A computer is used for controlling the deflecting devices to change the respective positions of the multiple independent beams in at least one co-ordinate direction within the field of operation. The deflecting devices include galvo/mirror pairs at the entrance pupil of the scan lens. This is accomplished since the scan lens has a relatively large entrance pupil and the mirror parts are small. The advantage of this arrangement is the ability of all beams to access a full working field (typically 2×2 inches) on the workpiece simultaneously, so that the highest efficiency of laser power utilization is achieved.

A multi-application IC card which processes two or more applications using an Application Abstract Machine architecture. The AAM architecture only allows one application to be executed at a time and allows for shared processing by performing a delegation function to a second application. A data space for each application is allocated when the application is selected to be executed. The data space includes a volatile and non-volatile region. The delegation function temporarily interrupts the execution of the first application, saves the temporary data of the first application, shares any data needed with the second application and the second application is executed until the delegated task is competed. The first application then retrieves the saved data and completes its execution. A delegator stack is used to keep track of the delegator's identity when multiple delegations occur. The AAM model allows for a high level of security while transferring data between applications.

An apparatus which is useful on pitched roofs includes structural features which help keep roofing materials from sliding off the roof. The apparatus also protects roofers from heat and abrasion from the roof surface on which they are working. A substantially solid foam rubber wedge forms one component of the apparatus, and a substantially planar pad forms the other component of the apparatus. These components are placed in proximity to each other so that the roofer, when situated on the pad, can readily reach roofing materials disposed against the wedge. The wedge resiliently compresses when roofing materials are placed on its upper surface. This resilient compression, the angle of orientation of the wedge's upper surface, and the frictional engagement of the wedge with the roof surface each contribute in varying degrees to holding roofing materials in position on the roof. The pad is made of material which reduces the amount of heat passing from the roofing surface to the upper surface of the pad on which the roofer is situated.

An optimized optical transmitter for use with a 1.3 .mu.m directly-modulated DFB laser. A negative fiber dispersion is intentionally introduced into the system by selecting the operating wavelength to be less than the nominal zero-dispersion value. The introduction of the negative fiber dispersion reduces the system power penalty and results in an optical transmission system useful over relatively short lengths of standard single mode fiber (50 km, for example) without the need for additional amplification.
