Abstract:
An aspiration and resuscitation system which is useable to perform aspiration and/or resuscitation procedures on living beings, particularly small animals, and most particularly newborn small animals such as puppies and kittens. The system includes an aspirator and a resuscitator. Each includes a separable pump and animal interface mask. Further disclosed are aspiration and resuscitation methods using the disclosed apparatus.

Methods and apparatus are provided controlling aircraft cabin pressure, and more specifically engine bleed air manifold pressure, during aircraft descent. An aircraft engine bleed air manifold control pressure setpoint is to either a descent pressure setpoint or a cruise pressure setpoint by determining a rotational speed of an aircraft engine component, determining a component speed setpoint value, and determining aircraft vertical speed. The engine bleed air manifold control pressure setpoint is set to the descent pressure setpoint if either the determined rotational speed of the aircraft engine component is below the component speed setpoint value or the aircraft vertical speed is less than a predetermined vertical speed value.

Methods and systems of maintaining, evaluating, and providing therapy to a lung ex vivo. The methods and systems involve positioning the lung in an ex vivo perfusion circuit; circulating a perfusion fluid through the lung, the fluid entering the lung through a pulmonary artery interface and leaving the lung through a left atrial interface; and ventilating the lung by flowing a ventilation gas through a tracheal interface. Maintaining the lung for extended periods involves causing the lung to rebreath a captive volume of air, and reaching an equilibrium state between the perfusion fluid and the ventilation gas. Evaluating the gas exchange capability of the lung involves deoxygenating the perfusion fluid and measuring a time taken to reoxygenate the perfusion fluid by ventilating the lung with an oxygenation gas.
Abstract:
A pharmaceutical composition includes, as an active ingredient, a compound according to formula 1436 as shown in FIG. 1, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient. Various pharmaceutical products may be produced including this pharmaceutical composition. Such pharmaceutical products may be used for the treatment of obesity or diabetes. Methods for using the pharmaceutical compositions also are described. In these methods, various diseases are treated or other body functions are activated or inhibited by administering an effective amount of the pharmaceutical composition. For example, diabetes and obesity may be treated by administering an effective amount of the pharmaceutical compositions. Weight gain, and growth factor production can be inhibited by administering an effective amount of these pharmaceutical compositions. Appetite can be suppressed by administering an effective amount of the pharmaceutical compositions, and a diuretic effect can be produced.
Abstract:
Disclosed are 4-arylamino-quinazolines and analogs thereof effective as activators of caspases and inducers of apoptosis. The compounds of this invention are useful in the treatment of a variety of clinical conditions in which uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells occurs, and in particular to the use of these compounds in treating brain cancer.
Abstract:
A method, apparatus, system, and signal-bearing medium that, in an embodiment, determine performance data for query optimization of a query directed to a database table having multiple partitions. The performance data for the query optimization is presented in a user interface, and an option is provided in the user interface to create a non-spanning index for any of the partitions mentioned in the performance data. In various embodiments, determining the performance data may include: determining the partitions that were unexpanded by the query optimization, determining the partitions that had a runtime estimate that was different from an actual query runtime by a threshold, determining whether any of the partitions had expansion forced by a client request, determining whether the query performed partition elimination, determining whether any of the partitions has an associated index that is unused by the query and that also has a key that is not present in all of the partitions, and determining a constraint for partition elimination.
Abstract:
An electronic image stabilization system includes an image sensor including an array of photo sensors. Each of the photo sensors accumulates charge responsive to light incident upon the sensor. A motion sensor develops a movement signal responsive to movement of the image stabilization system. A control circuit is coupled to the image sensor and the motion sensor and shifts the charge accumulated in each photo sensor in the array to an adjacent photo sensor responsive to the movement signal.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the casting of a composite metal ingot comprising at least two separately formed layers of one or more alloys. An open ended annular mould has a feed end and an exit end and divider wall for dividing the feed end into at least two separate feed chambers, where each feed chamber is adjacent at least one other feed chamber. For each pair of adjacent feed chambers a first alloy stream is fed through one of the pair of feed chambers into the mould and a second alloy stream is fed through another of the feed chambers. A self-supporting surface is generated on the surface of the first alloy stream and the second alloy stream is contacted with the first stream such that the upper surface of the second alloy stream is maintained at a position such that it first contacts the self-supporting surface where the self-supporting surface temperature is between the liquidus and solidus temperatures of the first alloy or it first contacts the self-supporting surface where the self-supporting surface temperature is below the solidus temperatures of the first alloy but the interface between the two alloys is then reheated to between the liquidus and solidus temperatures, whereby the two alloy streams are joined as two layers. The joined alloy layers are then cooled to form a composite ingot. This composite ingot has a substantially continuous metallurgical bond between alloy layers with dispersed particles of one or more intermetallic compositions of the first alloy in a region of the second alloy adjacent the interface. The combination of an alloy of high strength bonded to a surface layer of higher ductility gives a sheet of improved bendability compared to the high strength alloy used alone.
