    摘要: Reverse link busy bits are independently generated by each base station and indicate whether a base station has reached a reverse link capacity limit. A remote station combines multipath components of the reverse link busy bits in its Active Set and in response transmits a reverse link signal only when all of the reverse link busy bits indicate that the base stations in the Active Set have reverse link capacity. In an embodiment, the remote station weights the reverse link busy signals in accordance with the signal strength of the transmitting base station and determines whether to transmit based on the weighted sum of the busy signals. In an embodiment, the remote station weights the reverse link busy signals in accordance with the signal strength of the transmitting base station and determines a maximum reverse link data rate based on the weighted sum of the busy signals.

    摘要: A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile station deteriorates before the mobile station has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station is in communication with, referred to as an “Active Set”. In addition, the mobile station maintains another list of base stations that are proximate to the base stations in the active set. This list is referred to as the “Neighbor Set”. A memory within the mobile station includes information that would allow the mobile station to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station places a base station in the active set upon including the base station in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM). The mobile station monitors transmissions from all of the base stations on the active set to receive a handoff direction message (HDM).

    摘要: In a wireless communication system, in order to determine a level of loading, the system enters a period of silence during which a designated remote unit continues to transmit but other remote unit transmissions are interrupted. The base station and designated remote unit perform closed loop power control on a reverse link signal received from the designated remote. A first series of power control commands accumulated and a first corresponding transmit gain adjustment value is stored. Normal operation is resumed. Once again, the base station and designated remote unit perform closed loop power control on the reverse link signal received from the designated remote unit. A second series of power control commands are accumulated and a second corresponding transmit gain adjustment value is stored. A level of loading is determined based upon the first and second transmit gain adjustment values.

    摘要: A method for assigning optimal packet lengths in a variable rate communication system capable of data transmission at one of a plurality of data rates. The packet lengths for the data rates are selected such that the maximum throughput rate is achieved while conforming to a fairness criteria. The fairness criteria can be achieved by restricting the packet length assigned to each data rate to a range of value, or L.sub.i.sup.min .ltoreq.L.sub.i .ltoreq.L.sub.i.sup.max. The packet lengths for all data rates are first initialized to the maximum packet lengths for those data rates. Then, for each data rate, a determination is made whether another packet length assignment would result in improved throughput rate. If the answer is yes, the packet length for this data rate is reassigned and the throughput rate with the updated packet length assignments is recomputed. The process is repeated for each data rate until all data rates have been considered. The throughput rate can be calculated using a probabilistic model or a deterministic model.

    摘要: A method and apparatus of determining signal strength, regardless of the signal data rate, in a receiver receiving signals from a variable rate transmitter. The incoming signal is comprised of a series of frames. Each frame is comprised of a number of power control groups containing data. The number of the power control groups containing data within each frame is dependent on the unknown data rate. The position of the power control groups within the frame is a pseudorandom. The signal strength of an incoming signal of unknown data rate is determined based upon an active set of power control groups within a frame. The active set of power control groups contain data independent of the unknown data rate. This signal strength information may be used to indicate that the signal strength is sufficient to perform further signal processing.

    摘要: In a communication system in which direct sequence spread spectrum modulation techniques are used interference is generated in communications by remote stations since the communications share the same frequency spectrum. In order to increase system capacity the power level of the remote station transmitters are controlled by the local station. A setpoint is generated by the local station and compared with the remote station signal strength measured at the local station. The result of this comparison is used to generate power level adjustment commands which are sent to the remote station. The remote station is responsive to the power level adjustment commands for increasing or decreasing remote station transmitter power. In a spread spectrum communication system in which data is encoded at variable data rates, the local station determines the rate at which received data was encoded by the transmitting remote station. The data is decoded at each possible rate with error metrics generated that are representative of the quality of the data decoded at each rate. A rate decision algorithm is used to evaluate the error metrics and make a decision on the rate at which the data was transmitted. A pattern match of rate decisions is used to modify a setpoint so as to closely control the transmitting power of the remote station as a function of the quality of the received data.
