In an optical disk having a recording plane having a spiral first track and a spiral second track, information being to be recorded into and/or reproduced from said first and second tracks, the first track is formed into a groove-like shape, the second track is formed between adjacent the first tracks and into a land-like shape, and the first and second tracks record informations in different modulation methods.

An optical disc using a single-spiral land and groove track format and an address signal enabling simple sector address management and format compatibility with read-only optical disc media is disclosed. Four physical address areas PID1-PID4 are recorded to a header area such that PID1 and PID2 are offset one-half track pitch toward the outside circumference of the disc from the groove track center, and PID3 and PID4 are offset one-half track pitch toward the inside circumference of the disc from the groove track center, and the header area is shared by groove track sectors and land track sectors. A groove track sector address is written to PID3 and PID4, and the sector address of the land track sector adjacent on the outside circumference side of that groove sector is written to PID1 and PID2. The address of each sector increases 1 in the same sequence as the sectors are formed in the recording spiral.

A dc-stabilized power circuit which has a PNP-type output transistor that is connected between input and output terminals, a base-driving circuit for controlling the driving current of the base of the output transistor in response to the difference between a voltage obtained by voltage-dividing the output voltage from the output terminal and a reference voltage that has been preliminarily determined, and a driving-current suppressing circuit for detecting a voltage between the input and output terminals and for suppressing a driving current released by the driving-current supplying means based upon the result of the detection. The greater the input-output voltage, the further the driving-current suppressing circuit suppresses the driving current from the base-driving circuit to the output transistor, thereby suppressing the output current. Thus, in a dc-stabilized power circuit of a low-loss type which has no current-detecting resistor connected in the output line and which is provided with a control circuit that is constructed as an integrated circuit and that supplies a driving current to the base of the output transistor in response to the output voltage, the power loss due to the output transistor is suppressed to not more than a predetermined level; therefore, it is possible to prevent damage to the output transistor beforehand.

An optical information recording and reproducing apparatus for recording and reproducing information on and from an optical recording disk having an optically detectable guide track divided into a plurality of sectors is disclosed. When a sector to or from which a data is to be recorded or reproduced is a defective sector or a non-use sector because of updating, a special pattern signal is recorded on the defective sector or the non-use sector, and if the recorded special pattern signal is detected in the reproduction cycle, that sector is determined as a defective or non-use sector and recording or reproducing on or from that sector is inhibited.

An optical information recording and reproducing apparatus for recording and reproducing information from an optical recording disc including an optically detectable guide track preliminarily divided into a plurality of sectors. In the case of an unerasable disc, if an uncorrectable error exists in any sector after data has been recorded and reproduced from the sector, it is necessary to process this sector so as to prevent further reproduction an again record the data in another sector. Also, when updating a part of the data or erasing the file, it is desirable to take a measure so that reproduction of the data in any unwanted sector is prevented. Also, in the case of any unrecorded sector involving such dropout that the recording of data is presumed to cause an uncorrectable error, it is desirable to handle it as a defective sector and process it so as to prevent the recording of data therein. In such a case, it is desirable to effect the similar process also in the case of an erasable disc. A conceivable method of making such defective or unwanted sector distinguishable at a later time is to write in its information recording area a signal having a special pattern indicative of the defective or unwanted sector. In accordance with the invention, the reliability of special signal detection is increased by writing the special signal again when it is impossible to detect the special signal due to the occurrence of a track jump prior to or during the writing of the special signal, due to the occurrence of dropouts or the like.

An optical and reversible recording and reproducing apparatus providing a practical apparatus in which information signals can be recorded, reproduced and erased by irradiating a laser beam and the like on the substrate to be optically recorded. More practically, there is provided such an apparatus wherein two light sources such as lasers having different wavelengths are used, and a first almost circular micro-lightspot is produced by one light source, while a second elliptic light spot having a longitudinal diameter in the tangential direction of a guide track on a disc is produced by the other light source. These first and second light spots are closely irradiated on one and the same guide track of an optical recording disc. The recording and reproducing of the signals are performed using the first light spot while the erasure of the recorded signals can be made by using the second light spot or using both first and second light spots in combination.

An optical recording and reproducing head wherein light beams emitted from two light sources are combined and applied to a recording medium and the light beams reflected from the recording medium are drawn out in such a way that they are separated from each other. The wavelengths of the light beams from both light sources are different from each other, i.e., .lambda..sub.1, .lambda..sub.2, and the light beams from the light sources are combined by means of a polarization beam splitter, two quarter wave plates and optical filters, and are then simultaneously focussed by a single focussing lens substantially along the optical axis thereof, thereby allowing microspots of focussed light to be disposed on a disc close to each other. The light beams reflected from the disc are drawn out so as to be completely separated from each other by the polarization beam splitter owing to the difference in polarization direction.

An optical data recording and reproducing apparatus for recording digital data in a recording track on an optical recording disc. The apparatus includes a light illuminating unit for condensing an output light beam from a light source and for illuminating the disc, a recording-reproducing unit for recording and reproducing the digital data by a recording light beam and a reproducing light beam from the light illuminating unit, a dropout detecting and inspecting unit, and a recording-prohibited sector detecting unit to produce an output signal identifying a recording-prohibited sector where recording is prohibited responsive to an output signal from the dropout detecting and inspecting unit. The sector address of a recording-prohibited sector is recorded at least until recording of digital data in the recording track on the optical disc is begun. A comparator unit compares the sector address of the recording-prohibited sector with a sector address read continuously from the disc. The comparator generates a coincidence output signal which prohibits any output from the recording light beam, thus preventing any recording until the next sector on the disc is encountered.
