In some applications frequency selectivity may be desirable. Additionally, or alternatively, the verifier can determine the response in terms of frequency for interrogation signals having varying strengths. A machine-readable symbol verifier can be coupled to, or formed as part of, the RFID verifier. A printer can be coupled to, or formed as part of, the RFID tag verifier.

A supplemental switch is also disposed in the case and is manually activatable by a user, such as by the user's thumb. Logic disposed in the case is connected to a reading device and the supplemental switch for taking a first action when the switch is activated and taking a second action when it is not. The first and second actions may comprise first and second modes of operation of the reading device. When two or more reading devices are provided, the first and second actions may include reading operations of the first and second devices, respectively. Types of reading devices that may be incorporated into embodiments of the invention include bar code scanners, RF ID interrogators, and smart card scanners.

An optical system, such as a bar code scanner, illuminates an image with a multi-wavelength device. Under a first embodiment, a tunable laser is optically coupled with a prism or other wavelength separation device. As the laser beam wavelength varies, the transmission path through the prism changes, resulting in a scanning of the beam across an image. A photodetector captures light reflected from the image and sends it to a microprocessor for decoding. Under another embodiment, a broad band light source transmits light through a prism, thus shining a “rainbow” on the image. A spectrometer measures reflected light as a function of wavelength and sends the resultant signal to a microprocessor for decoding. Neither embodiment relies on moving parts to scan the image.

A smart label printing system and method for printing smart labels is provided. The smart label printing system enables the expedited programming of the RFID tag component of the smart label so that delays due to the unequal time between printing the exterior of the smart label and encoding the smart label are avoided. The smart label printing system comprises a thermal printing unit to print the exterior of the smart label as well as an RF driver to program the RFID tag embedded inside the smart label. Methods are provided to increase overall throughput speed of the smart label, including prioritizing RFID tag data over exterior printing data in a RAM, compressing RFID tag data sent from a host computer, pre-loading fixed and regularly varying data, and predicting variable unknown data through the use of an artificial intelligence model. In addition, methods for uniquely arranging programming antennas and media pathways which act to speed up overall programming speed are also provided.

A new bar code symbology in an exemplary embodiment employs three bars (and spaces) within nine modules, similar to Code 93. Fifty-three data characters are defined, including several special mode characters. By employing these special mode characters, together with certain routines, three symbol characters can represent two 8-bit bytes, or one 16-bit word. As a result, the symbology can efficiently encode 8-bit bytes for use in computer processing, or encode 16-bit character sets such as Unicode. Symbology encodes extended channel interpretation (ECI) numbers, provides multiple numeric compression modes, provides a structured append using a single mode character, as well as other features. Additionally, the symbology includes error correction, with a Special Features Flag character indicating use of error correction in a symbol.

An electrophotographic printer especially for bar code printing having an image transfer drum for placing an image onto a continuous form to be printed moved along a path by a form feed. A fusing roller is located downstream to fix the image on the form. The form is fed along a path past the transfer drum and fusing roller and after printing the last printed form is separated from the continuous form downstream of the image transfer drum leaving a leading edge on the unprinted form. The separation of the printed form is signaled to a controller which disables the image transfer device and fusing roller and causes the form feed to reverse moving the new leading edge upstream to a location immediately adjacent the image transfer drum. Various forms of printing, fixing the image onto the form, feeding the form and various types of forms such as barcoded labels on a carrier continuous form are disclosed. A method of printing and retracting a continuous form to utilize the unprinted portion of a form adjacent the last printed portion of a form at the end of a print run.
