A quantization part (14) sets a result of the subtraction as a quantization bit count (WL), and quantizes a normalized spectrum (S1) formed by normalization of a spectrum (S0) based on the quantization bit count (WL). A multiplexing part (53) multiplexes the information (NS), a quantized spectrum (QS) formed by quantization of the normalized spectrum (S1), and the envelope (ENV). A content category selector cross-references the noise data categorization result with the content category database, and on the basis thereof, selects a plurality of content data categories from among the categorized content data recorded onto the recording medium. A display unit then displays the selected plurality of content data categories.

If the quantization error in the second quantizer is greater than that in the first quantizer by a predetermined factor, the comparator controls a switch to select the output of the first quantizer.

The signal combining circuit combines the delayed positive-edge and negative-edge playback signals, and outputs (K+L+1) combined signals. The signal selecting circuit detects marks contained in the playback signal, the marks being independent of the (K+L+1) combined signals, and outputs selected ones of the combined signals based on the detected marks.
