The efficiency measuring unit is operable to: determine a first value of the efficiency measure using the received values corresponding to a first intermediate bus voltage (VIB); and determine a second value of the efficiency measure using the received values corresponding to a second intermediate bus voltage (VIB) higher than the first intermediate bus voltage. The voltage controller also includes a control signal generator operable to generate control signals to cause the first stage DC-to-DC converter to set the intermediate bus voltage (VIB) to a voltage higher than the second intermediate bus voltage if the second efficiency measure value represents a higher system efficiency than the first efficiency measure value, and to a voltage lower than the first intermediate bus voltage if the second efficiency measure value represents a lower system efficiency than the first efficiency measure value.

A VFF compensation signal is only applied to the output of the feedback unit when a transient is detected by the transient detector on the input voltage of the SMPS, thereby saving power and computation time. The transient detector comprises a first comparator to detect that a positive transient has occurred if a difference signal is greater than a positive threshold level; a second comparator to determine if the difference signal is within a predetermined range of positive values and output a result that indicates if the difference signal is within the predetermined range of positive values; and a first calculator to detect that a positive transient has occurred if, out of a first predetermined number of consecutive results of the output of the second comparator, there is at least a second predetermined number of results indicating that the difference signal is within the predetermined range of positive values. An embodiment of a method of determining a lower bound for a minimum cost of placing data objects onto nodes of a distributed storage system begins with a first step of assigning a placement of a data object to a node and a time interval which meets a benefit criterion. The method continues with a second step of continuing to assign additional placements of the data object to other node-intervals which each meet the benefit criterion until a performance reaches a performance threshold. The method concludes with a step of calculating a sum of storage costs and creation costs for the placement and the additional placements of the data objects. According to another embodiment, the data object placed in the first and second steps is chosen on a basis of a triplet of the data object, the node, and the interval which meets the benefit criterion.
