Abstract: A compound is disclosed that has a metal coordination complex structure having at least two ligands coordinated to the metal; wherein the compound has a first substituent R1 at one of the ligands' periphery; wherein a first distance is defined as the distance between the metal and one of the atoms in R1 where that atom is the farthest away from the metal among the atoms in R1; wherein the first distance is also longer than any other atom-to-metal distance between the metal and any other atoms in the compound; and wherein when a sphere having a radius r is defined whose center is at the metal and the radius r is the smallest radius that will allow the sphere to enclose all atoms in the compound that are not part of R1, the first distance is longer than the radius r by at least 2.9 Å.

Abstract: An organic light emitting device (OLED) that includes an anode, a cathode, and an organic layer disposed between the anode and the cathode. The organic layer includes a metal compound that comprises a ligand LA of Formula I, wherein the dashed lines represent coordination to a metal M. The metal M is selected from the groups consisting of Os, Ru, Ir, Rh, Pt, Pd, and Cu, and the metal is further coordinated to one or more ligand(s) LB, wherein the ligand(s) LB can be the same or different if more than one ligand LB is present. Optionally one or two of the ligand(s) LB can independently link to the ligand LA through one of R1 to R5. The invention is also directed to a consumer product that includes an OLED, and the OLED includes an organic layer that includes a metal compound that comprises a ligand LA of Formula I.

Abstract: A composition including a first compound capable of functioning as a phosphorescent emitter in an OLED is provided. The first compound has at least one aromatic ring and at least one substituent R directly bonded to one of the at least one aromatic rings. Each substituent R has the formula of where (a) G1 is selected from NR1, SiR1R2, GeR1R2, alkyl, cycloalkyl, and combinations thereof; and G2 is a non-aromatic polycyclic group; (b) G1 is a direct bond; and G2 is a non-aromatic spiro polycyclic group; or (c) G1 is selected from direct bond, NR1, SiR1R2, GeR1R2, alkyl, cycloalkyl, and combinations thereof; G2 is a non-aromatic polycyclic group; and R is directly bonded to a phenyl, pyridine, or triazine. R1, R2, and R3 are a variety of substituents. Formulations and devices, such as an OLEDs, that include the first compound are also described.
