Abstract:
The present invention is directed to an improved method and apparatus for the application of powdered resins to threaded fasteners. In accordance with the present invention, the powdered resin handling system used to apply, collect, recycle and make-up the resin is generally enclosed; that is, with the exception of the application of the resin to the fasteners, the resin is generally maintained within conduit, housings or hoppers that are not open to the surroundings. This tends to minimize discharge of resin into the areas surrounding the fastener processing equipment and also isolates the resin from external environmental conditions that tend to degrade the resin over time. In addition, the present invention introduces fresh, new or make-up resin in a manner that assures intimate and thorough intermixing of the new and recycled resin while minimizing the cost and complexity of the equipment employed for that purpose.
Abstract:
An installation for coating objects with a powder, in particular for powder painting, comprises a booth, in which powder can be applied to the objects, a recovery device for the excess powder, which does not adhere to the objects during coating, a storage container for fresh powder and a mixing container, which can be supplied with excess powder from the recovery device and fresh powder from the storage container. A screening machine is arranged in the immediate vicinity of the mixing container, preferably directly beneath the latter, and serves at the same time as an application container, in which mixed powder can be temporarily stored for removal by the application device. The screening machine is not subjected to any low-frequency vibrations, so that a weighing device, which continuously measures the weight of the screening machine, measures the instantaneous consumption of mixed powder in real time. From the stored data, an unambiguous correlation between the quantity of powder dispensed at a particular point in time and the object coated at the point in time in question is possible, so that in the event of faults in the coating operation any defective objects can be determined.
Abstract:
An apparatus for applying powder coating material onto large objects such as automotive, truck or other vehicle bodies includes a powder spray booth defining a controlled area within which to apply powder coating material onto the vehicle bodies, a powder kitchen located at a remote position from the powder spray booth, and, a number of feed hoppers located proximate the booth which receive powder coating material from the powder kitchen and supply it to automatically or manually manipulated powder spray guns associated with the booth. Oversprayed powder coating material is removed from the booth interior by a powder collection and recovery system which transmits the oversprayed powder back to the powder kitchen for recirculation to the powder spray guns.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for spraying a solid particulate powder onto the interior surface of tubular articles by intermittently pumping the powder from a fluidized bed of powder through a powder supply line containing an intermittently operated venturi pump and air amplifier, as well as a pair of constantly operated air diffusers and an electrostatic charging apparatus. A powder collection shroud adjacent at least one open end of the tubular article has a carefully regulated vacuum applied thereto in order to collect oversprayed powders.

Abstract:
A coating apparatus with a powder supply system for use in a device for electrostatically spraying powder material onto the surface of an article or substrate to be coated. The system includes a powder reclaiming and recycling system which pneumatically retrieves the unused powder from the spray booths and filters the powder from the air. The filter system includes plural modules, each capable of accommodating a given number of spray guns. An automatic filter shaking system releases the powder from the filters upon command by sequentially shutting down the filter modules, one at a time, while the system is in operation. An additional filter module is provided so that adequate filtering capability is maintained while the filter shaking operation proceeds. The powder released from the filters is blown from the filters to a feeder section through a sieve which mixes new powder with the reclaimed powder under automatic control which replenishes the powder supply to the feeder. The feeder employs a fluidizing bed from which (a plurality of) plural module feeders are fed. The feeders are positioned beneath the bed and draw powder through elongated standpipes for improved powder flow control. This configuration shows complete drainage of the bed and prevents ''''puffing'''' associated with conventional fluidized bed feeders. The feeders are quickly and easily detachable from the system and can be quickly and easily replaced or disassembled for cleaning when material or color change is desired.
Abstract:
In an electrostatic powder spray system wherein resin powder is fed from a supply hopper to a powder dispensing venturi and is propelled therefrom by pressurized air through a conduit to a spray gun, the venturi housing is constructed of insulating material so that resin powder particles electrostatically charged by the triboelectric effect are not attracted to the venturi housing walls and do not clog the venturi.
Abstract:
A feed center for powder coating material includes a hopper, an extraction duct, and a control valve. The hopper is in fluid communication with a fluidizing pressure source. The extraction duct is in fluid communication with at least one suction source. The control valve connects the extraction duct with an extraction port of the hopper. The control valve is operable between a first position for applying suction from the at least one suction source to the hopper, and a second position providing an exterior opening in at least one of the control valve and the first extraction duct for exhausting pressurized fluid from the hopper and/or collecting at least some of the air and powder that is exhausted from the powder.
Abstract:
A dense phase powder coating system includes a powder supply, dense phase pump, a spray gun and a diverter valve that can be used to select between conveying powder to the spray gun or circulating the powder back to the powder supply. The diverter valve may include two pneumatically actuate valve members. In one embodiment, the powder spray gun applies powder coating material to inside surfaces of a tubular container. A spray nozzle concept also is presented having a nozzle body with a conical deflector. The spray nozzle provides an uninterrupted flow between spray nozzle outlet holes and a deflector surface. The deflector may be integrally machined with the nozzle body to provide a one piece spray nozzle.
