A process for hydroprocessing a renewable feedstock in a fixed-bed reactor system having at least one catalytic bed involves directing a downward flow of the renewable feedstock to a filtering zone having top-open interstitial portions to receive the downward flow and top-covered annular portions that are in fluid communication with a headspace between the filtering zone and a catalytic zone. The feedstock flows from the interstitial portions to the annular portions through a filtering material disposed between the interstitial portions and the annular portions, resulting in a filtered feedstock, which then flows to the catalytic zone. In the catalytic zone, filtered feedstock is reacted under hydroprocessing conditions sufficient to cause a reaction selected from the group consisting of hydrogenation, hydrodeoxygenation, hydrodenitrogenation, hydrodesulphurization, hydrodemetalation, hydrocracking, hydroisomerization, and combinations thereof.

A method and apparatus for filtering a slurry utilizing a displacement filtering principle. The filter apparatus desirably includes an inner filter and an outer filter. Both the inner and outer filters are preferably substantially annular in shape and positioned concentrically with respect to each other. A particulate collection volume is at least partially defined between the inner and outer filter. The method includes directing a flow of slurry into the particulate collection volume under sufficient pressure to force fluid within the particulate collection volume through one of the inner and outer filters and any particulate matter blocking a filtering surface of the inner and outer filters.

A filtration device for removing particulate matter from liquids has a rigid tubular body that terminates in a pair of open ends. The body has a plurality of openings therein, leading to a bore, and a layer of a filtration material, such as a polypropylene mesh, is stretched over the surface of the body. The filtration material has a preferred pore size of between 30 and 60 microns. The body is manufactured from plastic, and has a support means which prevents collapse of the filtration device under pressure. The filtration material is attached near the ends of the body, and a pair of end caps are attached to the ends. The end caps serve as means of fitting the filtration device within equipment such as automated photographic processing apparatus. The materials used to manufacture the filtration device are chosen so as to be resistant to both the physical conditions (such as temperature, pressure and flow rate) and the chemical conditions of the apparatus. An advantage of having the filter material on the outside is that liquid flows from outside the filter, through the body and the inside, trapping particulate matter on the outside surface of the filter. The filter can be removed from the equipment where it is used, and particulate matter trapped on its surface washed off, and the filter can be reused, resulting in a substantial cost savings compared to the use of disposable filters.

An improved filter assembly is provided using a bag-type vessel shell and a removable adapter assembly that contains multiple filter cartridges. The invention can be used with both double-open-end filter cartridges and single-open-end filter cartridges. In either case, both ends of the filter cartridges are held in place by individual positioning guides, so as to maintain a perpendicular orientation and seal integrity. In all cases, a knife-edge end seal is provided to be forced into the end surfaces of the filter cartridges. In one embodiment, a compression plate is provided with a single coil spring to force the multiple knife-edge end seals against their respective filter cartridges. In a second embodiment, individual floating end seals are provided at the compression plate to provide good seal integrity regardless of variations in length of the individual filter cartridges. In all embodiments, the separator seal and the ambient seal are one and the same assembly, thereby providing a visual indication of seal integrity between the contamination and purified fluids. In all embodiments, a quick-release tie-rod and handle configuration is used to easily assemble and disassemble the adapter assembly during filter cartridge replacement procedures.
