Continuous dyeing of voluminous cellulose fabrics, according to a two-bath procedure and without intermediate drying, with azo dyes produced on the fiber by coupling of their formation components is effected by incorporation in a developing liquor with which the previously impregnated fabric is slop-padded, wet-in-wet, of a combination comprising homo- or copolymers of acrylic acid amide and a wetting agent into said developing liquor; the liquor uptake by the moist fiber material is increased and the penetration rate of this liquor during the coupling is incited in such a manner that textile articles which exhibit even, well penetrated dyeings are obtained.Dyeing of for example cord, velvet, terry or pile fabrics with azo developing dyes has become feasible only in accordance with this invention. The process may be carried out also in semicontinuous operation.

Azo developing dyestuffs are produced by diazotizing on the fiber a mono- to tetramine derived from a metal-containing or metal-free phthalocyanine, the amino group(s) being bound to a phenyl or naphthyl group (which may be substituted) which is linked via a bridge member to the phthalocyanine which may further contain up to 3 optionally substituted sulfon amide groups and up to 3 sulfo groups, and coupling said diazotized amino onto azoic coupling components usual for preparing developing dyestuffs.

This invention provides an absorbent composition comprising a reactant product of (1) amines or amides; (2) carbon disulfide, or carbonyl sulfide; (3) polyvalent metal ions; and, (4) a waterdispersable reactive polymeric material. A water-soluble silicate may be present as an optional material during the reaction. The reaction is carried out in an alkaline water solution or dispersion, and the above noted absorbent composition then precipitates. The resulting absorbent composition may be used as an ion exchange medium; to form lakes by absorption of dyes soluble or dispersable in water or water-immiscible solvents; to absorb from water solutions or dispersions of toxic or otherwise objectionable materials such as chromates, lead or mercury salts, etc.; to absorb dye intermediates, which when absorbed may be further reacted to form dyes which remain on the composition of this invention; to coat paper and facilitating ink absorption on paper; to manufacture pigments which blend readily in oleophylic vehicles, as well as in hydrophylic vehicles.
