A hermetic compressor capable of preventing malfunction due to impurities trapped between contact portions of a crankshaft and a crankshaft supporting frame when the crankshaft rotates in a hollow portion of the frame. The hermetic compressor comprises the frame having the hollow portion, the crankshaft rotatably inserted in the hollow portion, a balance weight provided at one end of the crankshaft, and a thrust portion formed at the frame to support the crankshaft. An impurities discharge passage is formed at an outer circumferential surface of the crankshaft that comes into frictional contact with the thrust portion of the frame to guide impurities, mixed with the oil, out of the crankshaft. Correspondingly, a plurality of discharge guiding grooves is formed at the thrust portion of the frame to guide the oil and the impurities, having passed through the impurities discharge passage of the crankshaft, out of the thrust portion.

The compressor includes a housing having a crank chamber and cylinder bores, and a swash plate located in the crank chamber. The swash plate is operably connected to the pistons by shoes to convert the rotation of a drive shaft to the reciprocation of each piston. Each piston has a head for compressing the gas supplied to the cylinder bore and a skirt projecting from the head toward the crank chamber. The skirt is connected to the swash plate. A restrictor is provided on the skirt to prevent the piston from rotating in the cylinder bore. The restrictor has a pair of arched surfaces slidably contacting an inner surface of the housing and a recessed surface located between the arched surfaces and free from contact with the inner surface. The recessed surface defines a gap for allowing passage of the oil between the recessed surface and the inner surface. The gap leads the oil in the crank chamber toward the shoes when the piston moves from a top dead center position to a bottom dead center position.

A bearing is disposed in the second chamber to rotatably support the drive shaft relative to the pump body. An oil intake passage is provided for feeding the first and second chambers with a lubricating oil, and an oil discharge passage is provided for discharging the lubricating oil from the first and second chambers.

The passageway provides for the passage of blowby gas during downward movement of the piston, thereby permitting the oil control ring to seat against the upper surface of its groove. The present invention effectively controls the flow of oil toward the compression ring of the ring assembly without the requirement for a passageway communicating the inter-ring cavity with a saturated, turbulent flow, oil environment.

An apparatus and method is provided for producing a piston assembly for use in a fluid translating device such as a hydraulic pump or motor. In the subject arrangement, a piston is provided having a cavity at one end thereof and a slipper having a spherical head portion which is precisely positioned within the cavity to provide a space therearound and subsequent thereto a plastic material is formed in the space to maintain the spherical head portion in the cavity. This arrangement eliminates the sliding friction that exists in other piston assemblies and furthermore reduces the precise sizing of the cavity relative to the spherical head portion.

A chuck actuator has a cylinder extending along an axis and having an axially extending stem whose outer surface is formed with a pair of central radially outwardly open and axially spaced intake ports, a piston axially displaceable in the cylinder and forming therein two compartments connected via respective passages connected to the intake ports, two axially spaced bearings on the stem, and a connector supported by the bearings on the stem. This connector normally is restrained against rotation relative to the axis and has an inner surface closely juxtaposed with and forming with the stem surface an interface. Respective radially inwardly open and axially spaced inner feed grooves open at the interface level with the respective intake ports. Two independent hydraulic fittings communicating with the inner feed grooves can pass pressurized liquid to the respective compartments. A pair of middle lubricating grooves immediately axially flanking the inner feed grooves and opening radially inward at the interface, are connected to a drain chamber below the axis by respective middle drain passages extending downward from the middle lubricating grooves to the drain chamber. A shunt passage carries liquid axially therebetween and respective lubricating passages carry liquid from the middle grooves to the bearings. Respective outer drain grooves open radially on the connector between each bearing and the respective middle groove, and are connected with the bearings by respective outer drain passages to the drain chamber.
