When a pinion gear abuts the end face of a ring gear and the pinion moving body is restricted from moving forward, the entire rotary force of an output shaft acts on the pinion moving body. The resilient restricting member flexes further in the restricting member holder to allow rotation of the pinion moving body, thus enabling the pinion gear to mesh the ring gear. Thus, the rotary force of the output shaft is converted to the advancing force of the pinion moving body surely even when the spiraling of the helical spline is not so large.

In an engine starter comprising a pinion slidably fitted on the output shaft for driving a ring gear of an engine that is to be started, and a one-way clutch having a first end secured to the pinion and a second end which is engaged by the output shaft via spline means, a compression coil spring is interposed between a stopper secured to the output shaft and an annular shoulder defined in a cylindrical extension of the second end of the one-way clutch. Therefore, even when the pinion is forced into a high speed rotation by the engine which has been started by the engine starter, the pinion simply rotates freely, and no friction is applied to the compression coil spring or the stopper. Also, by receiving the compression coil spring in an annular space defined between the cylindrical extension of the second end of the one-way clutch and the output shaft, the compression coil spring can be protected from the centrifugal force which acts upon the compression coil spring when the output shaft of the engine starter rotates at an extremely high speed.

An overrunning clutch that can absorb the impact torque, and accurately and easily conveys the maximum torque. A clutch outer tubular portion and inner tubular portion are separately fixed on an internal gear and a center case of an epicycle gear reduction mechanism. A wedge-shaped groove is formed on one of an inner circumference of the outer tubular portion and an outer circumference of the inner tubular portion to accomodate a rolling element. A fitting concave portion to fit the rolling element is formed on the other one of the inner circumference of the outer tubular portion and the outer circumference of the inner tubular portion. With this, the torque value generated when the rolling element leaves the fitting concave portion can be accurately set just by setting the depth of the fitting concave portion. The radial force that acts on the opposite direction of the tubular portions holding the rolling element can be reduced. This allows the strength of the tubular portions to be reduced, and the weight to be lightened. As the torque is not conveyed with frictional force, the wear is also reduced.

A stopper mechanism for impeding the outward movement of the pinion (12) along the output shaft (3a) is implemented by forming the helical splines (31) on the output shaft (3a) as being alternately open (31a, 31b) and closed (32a) helical splines. The thrust washer (21), for bearing the outward axial force of the output shaft (3a), is disposed in the front bracket (5) of the starter in front of the front bearing (16) and opposed to the front end (3d) of the output shaft (3a). Both the stopper mechanism and thrust washer configuration according to the invention allow for a reduced diameter of the output shaft (3a). The reduced diameter of the output shaft, in turn, affords the option of making the pinion (12) smaller in diameter.

By setting the upper and lower coil ends and of upper and lower armature coils approximately parallel to the end side of the armature core, and by connecting the upper coil end and lower coil end, the upper and lower coil ends can be stored in an axially projecting small space adjacent the armature core. As a result, the anti-centrifugal force of the armature can be increased, and the mechanical load applied to the starter motor can be drastically reduced. As the upper and lower coil ends are near the armature core, the heat generated by the upper and lower coil ends is easily dissipated to the armature core, and the thermal load applied to the starter motor can be reduced.

A starter equipped with a planetary gear reduction mechanism, which allows a significant reduction in the inertial mass of the planetary gear shaft supporting member is disclosed. The invention includes a planetary gear shafts that are formed integral with the planetary gear shaft supporting member, which is inserted and secured on a drive shaft. Such a structure allows for the weight of the planetary gear shaft supporting member to be reduced significantly, and reduction in the inertial mass of the drive shaft is likewise achieved. Further, breakage of teeth of the pinion gear or the ring gear at repeated engagements of the rotating pinion gear is prevented. In addition, the planetary gear shaft supporting member and the planetary gear shafts are made by forming a metal plate and the planetary gear shafts can be manufactured easily by bending the plate or burring.
