    Abstract: Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a wireless communication device may receive an encoded communication, the encoded communication being encoded with a hierarchical coding scheme comprising: first layer code blocks including pairs of information bits and sets of first parity bits, and second layer code blocks including sets of second parity bits, with each set of the second parity bits associated with a subset of the first layer code blocks. The wireless communication device may decode the encoded communication based at least in part on one or more of the sets of the second parity bits that are associated with one or more of the first layer code blocks determined to have failed decoding based at least in part on one or more associated sets of the first parity bits. Numerous other aspects are described.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A base station may determine to apply tone reservation to a downlink transmission from the base station to a user equipment (UE), and may select to rate match data of the downlink transmission around selected resource elements for the tone reservation instead of puncturing the data of the downlink transmission. The base station may transmit, to the UE, a message indicating that tone reservation is applied to the downlink transmission via rate matching, and transmit the downlink transmission including the data rate matched around the selected resource elements used for tone reservation. The UE may identify the selected resource elements used for tone reservation based on an estimation of a channel between the UE and the base station, and decode the data of the downlink transmission via rate matching around the selected resource elements used for tone reservation.
