Abstract:
A refractory ceramic composite for an armor shell, comprising a ceramic core that is formable to replicate a portion of a three dimensional surface, e.g., of an aircraft, to provide ballistic protection. A method of making a shell of refractory ceramic armor capable of conforming to the geometry is provided. The shell is formed by forming a mold to replicate the surface area; arranging a ceramic core on the mold; and removing the mold to leave said ceramic core, and heat treating the ceramic core to a desired hardness. The ceramic core is in the shape of the surface area.
Abstract:
A composite article includes a substrate and a ceramic nanocomposite layer disposed on the substrate. The ceramic nanocomposite layer has a composition that includes silicon, boron, carbon and nitrogen.
Abstract:
An exemplary assembly includes at least one elongated tension member. A jacket covers at least some of the tension member. The jacket comprises a polymer material. The assembly includes a flame retardant selected from a group consisting of a halogen-free melamine based intumescent or a filled polymer having a nanoscale filler chemically bonded to a matrix phase.
Abstract:
A machining system includes a support configured to retain an article, such as a rotor disk, having an area, such as a surface of a slot in the disk. A cutting tool, for example, a broach, is movable relative to the support to cut the area. A heating member, such as a laser, is configured to locally heat the area of the article. In one example, the cutting tool includes a body having a cutting edge. The heating member is supported by the body and is configured to provide heat adjacent to the cutting edge. The cutting edge cuts the locally heated area while the area is still heated.
Abstract:
A photocatalyst formed using a sol-gel process provides high photoactivity, increased photocatalyst lifetime, and improved resistance to performance degradation caused by siloxane-based contaminants. The photocatalyst is formed by a method including the steps of photocatalyst template creation, template conditioning, template refinement, and coating application.
Abstract:
A bond coat system for silicon based substrates wherein a compliant layer having an elastic modulus of between 30 and 130 GPa is provided between the silicon based substrate and a silicon metal containing oxygen gettering layer.
Abstract:
A process for manufacturing an article includes the steps of applying a quantity of a refractory metal sufficient to produce a coating on a carbon based felt; processing thermally a refractory metal coated carbon based felt at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to form a ceramic based felt; and cooling the ceramic based felt under a controlled atmosphere.
Abstract:
A refractory ceramic composite having a fibrous ceramic core and a solid ceramic coating is provided. An intermediate for making refractory composite ceramics is also provided. The intermediate includes a reaction product of a refractory metal and a carbon based felt, wherein a quantity of the refractory metal present is stoichiometrically non-equivalent to a quantity of carbon present during the formation of the reaction product so that the reaction product comprises a ceramic based felt having free, unreacted refractory metal thereon.
Abstract:
A system and method that redistributes light from a light source. The controller can redistribute light to make an irradiance profile of the light source more uniform or make the irradiance profile match a fluid flow profile. The irradiance profile may be controlled by modifying light leakage from a plurality of waveguides or changing the light-directing properties of reflectors and/or lenses.
