A repeatability of reproduced video at a varied speed is obtained without any deterioration in picture quality, because of recording of the specific data for speed-varied reproduction and the continuous detection of the specific data in the speed-varied reproduction. Apparatus and method for controlling recording and/or reproduction of digital signals to and/or from a digital storage medium, are discussed. According to an embodiment, the method includes receiving digital data, the digital data including video data compressed as at least one of intra-frame and predictive frame, stuffing data, synchronous signals, and relative position information associated with an I-frame; detecting the synchronous signals for decoding the video data; obtaining the video data from the digital data by removing the stuffing data based on stuffing code information; determining a position associated with the I-frame by using the relative position information; determining whether a speed-varied reproduction mode is selected for reproduction of the video data in a varied speed; and reproducing the video data based on the determined position associated with the I-frame, the synchronous signals, and a result of the step of determining whether the speed-varied reproduction mode is selected.

The reel brake device comprises a tension band mounted on an outer circumference of a reel disc to control tension, the reel disc which is rotatably mounted on the main chassis to drive a tape reel of a tape cassette, and a brake unit fixed on the main chassis to help the tension band be in contact with the outer circumference of the reel disc. This can replace a conventional brake unit having a complicated structure, and therefore, the number of component parts can be reduced.

The travelling speed of a magnetic tape is controlled without considering a detection error caused by the slackening of a magnetic tape or the like. A microcomputer 10, immediately after starting a fast-feeding operation, starts a running rotation of feeding and winding reels 44, 45 (step S205), calculates an N value based on reel pulses and sets an acceleration target (step S210, S215) and simultaneously reads the N value immediately before the previous stop of the rotation from RAM and compares the read N value with the current N value (step S225, S230), prohibits the acceleration of the feeding and winding reels 44, 45 after confirming that the error does not fall within 25% (step S235) whereby when the videotape is rotated to the leader or the trailer, the videotape is prevented from being applied with an excessive load so that damages on the videotape can be reduced.

A reel-to-reel tape system stops movement of the tape during a power loss situation without overrun by one of the tape reels and without causing undue stress upon the tape itself. If rotational momentum of the supply reel is sensed to be disproportionately larger than the momentum of the take-up reel, supply motor back emf for dynamically braking the supply reel is applied while also driving the take-up reel in the direction of rotation in which it operated when the power source was discontinued. An appropriate amount of tension is maintained on the tape until the tape motion has come to a complete stop. A capacitor large enough to supply the power needed to provide current to the power bridge of the motor drivers is provided. The capacitor is charged upon power up of the drive and is not tapped unless and until the normal supply voltage of the motor drivers is turned off. The take-up reel motor is provided with optimum current to take up the loose tape that otherwise would be produced in the tape path and around the reels, thus preventing a hazardous situation.
