摘要: A method for producing an optical multiple fiber, which comprises bundling a multiplicity of silica glass light-conducting elements and drawing the bundle of the light-conducting elements in the state that a liquid intermediary material (comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of glass forming oxides, glass modifying oxides and intermediate oxides) exists among the elements; thereby providing a multiple fiber excellent in image-transmitting capacity and image-resolving power, by fusing together a multiplicity of silica glass light-conducting elements with each other in drawing to prevent the occurrence of bubbles.

摘要: A method and apparatus for assembling fiber optic devices in multi-fiber layers to avoid the problems of misalignment and interstices. The furnace apparatus includes a mold for receiving the fiber devices and a packing piston for placing each layer of fiber devices in position. Heating is maintained in the furnace at a level so that heat penetrates from the fibers already packed into the new layer sufficiently to enable the new layer to adhere, but no more, so that the piston may be withdrawn before it adheres to the new layer.

摘要: A filament winding reel in a method and apparatus for producing optical fiber bundles, includes an end disc and circumferentially spaced freely rotatable longitudinally projecting rollers. A pair of outwardly open peripherally spaced filament guides having aligned guide channels are mounted on the border of the disc and have widths substantially equal to, or slightly greater than the optical fiber thickness. The fibers are tensioned by a tensioning roller carried by a disc mounted lever disposed approximately opposite the guides and outwardly spring biased, and longitudinal pressure is applied to the fibers proximate the guides to uniformly align the fibers in the guide channels by tensioning bars bearing on the sides of the fibers proximate the guides.

摘要: A process for producing a bundle of optical fibers aligned in a highly parallel and compact state, which comprises tying a bundle of a number of optical fibers at a small portion in the vicinity of its one end, holding the tied portion and suspending the nontied substantial portion of the bundle vertically with said substantial portion being exposed to air, applying a liquid pressure to the tied end portion of said bundle to allow liquid to flow through the interspaces among the individual fibers from the tied end to the free end of the bundle, and imparting a mechanical vibration to the fiber bundle simultaneously with the application of the liquid pressure, and an apparatus for performing said process.

摘要: This invention relates to a technique and device for accurately aligning filaments of varying size that are wound on a drum and is particularly useful in winding glass filaments for optical use. As the filamentary material is wound on a rotating steel drum, it is held in place next to the preceding winding by means of a magnetically coupled rider whose contacting surfaces are made of materials having low sliding friction. The rider is prevented from rotating with the drum by means of a rod positioned axially with respect to the rotating steel drum. The force with which the rider presses against the preceding winding or layer may be controlled by an electromagnet in the rider or by varying the alignment of the rod with respect to the axis of the steel drum.

摘要: A LONG AND RELATIVELY THIN FIBER OPTICAL MULTIFIBER STRUCTURE IS FORMED TO A RHOMBOIDAL CROSS-SECTIONAL SHAPE SO AS TO ACHIEVE MAXIMUM PACKING DENSITY OF CONVOLUTIONS OF A SIMILARLY SHAPED FIBER DRAWN FROM THE STRUCTURE AND MACHINE WOUND ON A DRUM TO FORM A RIBBON OF SEVERAL FIBER WIDTHS FOR USE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF FIBER OPTICAL IMAGE-CONDUCTING FIBERSCOPES AND THE LIKE. THE FIBER IS HELICALLY WOUND WITH ONE FLAT SIDE THEREOF AGAINST THE DRUM USING A LEAD NO GREATER THAN THAT OF THE WIDTH OF SAID ONE FLAT SIDE AND MOVING PARALLEL TO THE DRUM IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF SLOPE, TOWARD THE DRUM, OF ADJACENT SIDES OF THE FIBER. IT IS ALSO CONTEMPLATED THAT THE WINDING LEAD BE SLIGHTLY LESS THAN SAID WIDTH OF THE FIBER TO ASSURE MAXIMUM PACKING DENSITY. A PLURALITY OF RIBBONS ARE SUPERPOSED WITH THE OBLIQUE SIDES OF THE THOMBOIDAL MULTIFIBERS IN ALTERNATE RIBBONS BEING NONALIGNED.

摘要: A METHOD FOR UNIFORM OR MIXED SCRAMBLING OF BRANCHED FIBER OPTICS, WINDS AN INITAL OF FIBER ON A DRUM OF A FIBER DRAWING MCHINE WHICH HAS SPACED, DOUBLE-FACED TAPE PLACED ON THE DRUM PARALLEL TO THE AXIS OF THE DRUM, AND THE FIBERS STRANDS ARE PLACED APPROXIMATELY TWO DIAMETERS APART. A SECOND LAYER OF TAPE IS PLACED OVER THE FIBERS AND ON THE FIRST LAYER OF TAPE, AND A SECOND LAYER OF FIBER IS WOUND AROUND THE DRUM IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE FIBERS OF THE FIRST LAYER. A FINAL LAYER OF TAPE IS PLACED OVER THE SECOND LAYER OF TAPE ABOVE THE OTHER LAYERS OF TAPE. THE FIBERS INTERMEDIATE THE TAPE STRIPS ARE SECURED TOGETHER BY LACQUER OR CEMENT, AND THE FIBERS ARE THEN CUT IN THE LACQUERED SETION. A CUT IS MADE CENTERWISE OF THE TAPE STRIPS ALONG A LINE PARALLEL TO THE AXIS OF DRUM FROMING A STRIP OF FIBERS WITH ONE LACQUERED END AND A DIVIDED TAPED END. THE LACQUERED END IS THEN ROLLED INTO THE DESIRED CROSS-SECTIONAL CONFIGURATION, AND THE SEPARATED LAYERS IN THE TAPE SECTION ARE THEN ROLLED INTO THE DESIRED CONFIGURATION FORMING AN OPTICAL FIBER WITH A COMMON END AND A BRANCHED END.
