Abstract: An optical system for an optical head of an optical disc drive is capable of using first and second discs, protective layer of the second disc being thicker than that of the first disc, a data density of the second disc being lower than that of the first disc. A light source selectively emits first and second laser beams having first and second wavelengths, respectively. An objective lens converges the first and second beams on the first and second discs, respectively. The second beam is incident on the objective lens as diverging light, and the first beam is incident on the objective lens as a beam of which degree of divergence is smaller. A diffraction lens structure is formed in the high NA exclusive area, which compensates for aberrations of a portion of the first laser beam, and causes aberrations to a portion of the second laser beam passed therethrough.

Abstract: An ultrasonic tool, for bonding two materials to each other by joining a face of one of the materials to a face of the other material using the action of ultrasonic waves applied to one of the materials through another face of the one of the materials, wherein the ultrasonic tool has a coating layer comprising chromium oxide as a main component formed on at least the surface of the tool that is in contact with the face of the one of the materials through which the ultrasonic waves are applied to the one of the materials. An ultrasonic bonder provided with the ultrasonic tool is also disclosed.

Abstract: An objective lens for two or more types of optical discs of different standards is provided. Abstract: A pain inferring device for designing a shape giving a subject as little pain as possible when the subject touches the shape. The pain inferring device includes an input unit, an output unit, a main control unit, a learning storage unit, and a neural network. The neural network learns the relationship between the input value of shape data and the output value of the data on the degree of pain when a subject touches a shape. By the learning, an input/output function (namely, the coefficient of coupling of neurons in layers) representing the relationship between the input and output values is defined and stored in the learning storage unit. When the shape data is inputted through the input unit, the neural network infers the degree of pain by using the function stored in the learning storage unit.

Abstract: Disclosed is an objective lens of an optical pick-up that converges light beams of two different wavelengths onto recording layers of optical discs of two different recording densities, respectively. The objective lens includes a refractive lens whose one surface is divided into a common area through which a light beam of a low NA, which is necessary and sufficient for an optical disc having low recording density, passes and a high NA exclusive area through which a light beam of a high NA, which is necessary only for an optical disc having high recording density, passes. A diffractive lens structure is formed in both the areas. The diffractive lens structure in the common area maximizes the diffraction efficiency of the first order and that in the high NA exclusive area maximizes the diffraction efficiency of the second or third order at the wavelength corresponding to the optical disc having high recording density.

Abstract: An optical system of an optical pick-up includes a light source portion that selectively emits a first laser beam (shorter wavelength) and a second laser beam (longer wavelength), and an objective lens for converging the first laser beam onto a first optical disc and for converging the second laser beam onto a second optical disc. The second optical disc has lower recording density and a thicker cover layer than the first optical disc. The divergence of the second laser beam incident on the objective lens is larger than that of the first laser beam, correcting one part of spherical aberration caused by a difference in thickness of the cover layer. A diffractive lens structure is formed on a surface of the refractive lens so that the residual part of the spherical aberration is corrected by switching the wavelength of the laser beam.
