A Rankine cycle system includes a first Rankine cycle (2A) operated by a first working medium and a second Rankine cycle (2B) operated by a second working medium. The first Rankine cycle (2A) is constituted from an evaporator (3A), an expander (4), a condenser (5A) and a supply pump (6A), and the second Rankine cycle (2B) is constituted from an evaporator (3B), the expander (4), a condenser (5B) and a supply pump (6c). The evaporator (3A) in the first Rankine cycle (2A) and the evaporator (3B) in the second Rankine cycle (2B) are disposed at locations upstream and downstream of an exhaust emission control device (8) mounted in an exhaust passage (7) for the internal combustion engine (1). The first working medium has a boiling point higher than that of the second working medium, and the capacity of the pump (6A) in at least the first Rankine cycle (2A) is variable. Thus, the efficiency of recovery of a waste heat from the internal combustion engine by the Rankine cycle system can be enhanced to the maximum, and the activation of the exhaust emission control device can be promoted.

An integrated steam-ammonia power cycle is disclosed which achieves a close match to a glide heat source such as exhaust from a gas turbine, and which also eliminates sub-atmospheric pressure operation. With reference to FIG. 1, the exhaust heats in sequence steam superheater 107; steam boiler 105; feedwater preheater 104 plus ammonia superheater 103; and ammonia preheater 102. Steam is expanded to at least 17 psia in turbine 108, then condensed to boil ammonia in boiler 110. Superheated ammonia is expanded in turbine 112, and condensed in condenser 114. Feed ammonia is preheated in at least two parallel preheaters.

The raised temperature is higher at the first portion than at the second portion. A first evaporating portion generates a first vapor from the first raised temperature portion. A portion of the water dispensed by the dispensing valve (106) is further pressurized and supplied to the evaporator (3) by the higher-pressure pump (8), and another portion of the water dispensed by the dispensing valve (106) is discharged to the tank (6) after dissipating its heat in an auxiliary (110) such as a heater for heating a vehicle compartment and the like. Thus, it is possible to sufficiently cool heated portions of the internal combustion engine (1) by the water which is a liquid-phase working medium, while maintaining the performance of the Rankine cycle system, thereby aiming at the disuse of a radiator.

In the gas turbine combined plant, water fed to an entrance of a high-pressure economizer is guided into an air cooler as a cooling medium of high-temperature air that passes through the air cooler. High-temperature water obtained by heat exchanging with high-temperature air is branched to a passage that joins water drawn from an exit of the high-pressure economizer and a passage that joins a condenser. These passages are provided with regulating valves that regulate the flow rate of the water that passes through these passages, respectively.
