Abstract: An enhanced listen-before-talk procedure may be performed by a device for efficiently accessing and utilizing available resources. The procedure may include specifying input parameter values pertaining to intended wireless communications of the device, adjusting output parameter values based on the input parameter values and an access history of the device, and determining whether to access at least a portion of the wireless communication resources to conduct the wireless communications, based at least on the output parameter values. The output parameter values may pertain to wireless communication resources accessible to the device, and the access history may keep track of wireless communication resource accesses previously made by the device. Input parameter values may include requested channel occupation time, requested frequency resource, requested transmission power, and/or priority and/or urgency of requested transmission, while output parameter values may include energy detection threshold, contention window size, and/or extended clear channel assessment bypass.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for efficient idle mode wakeup for wireless devices supporting an enhanced coverage mode and a normal coverage mode in a wireless communication system. A wireless device may camp on a cellular base station in idle mode. The wireless device may monitor a control channel associated with the normal coverage mode during a paging occasion. The wireless device may also monitor a control channel associated with the enhanced coverage mode during the paging occasion if a paging indication is not successfully decoded on the control channel associated with the normal coverage mode.

Abstract: Methods, apparatuses and computer readable media are described that determine a connection state between a mobile wireless device and a wireless network upon detection of an interruption of a connection between the mobile wireless device and the wireless network. The mobile wireless device transmits an uplink resource allocation message to the wireless network, and when receiving no response to the uplink resource allocation message, transmits a random access message to the wireless network. When receiving no response from the wireless network to the random access message, the mobile wireless device executes a radio link failure procedure. In an embodiment, the uplink resource allocation message includes a unique identifier for an existing radio resource control connection between the mobile wireless device and the wireless network.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods to support multiple subscriber identities in a wireless communication device are disclosed. A representative method includes the wireless communication device communicating with a first wireless network via a first wireless cellular protocol software stack for a first subscriber identity provided by a first subscriber identity module; communicating with a second wireless network via a second wireless cellular protocol software stack for a second subscriber identity provided by a second subscriber identity module; and sharing mobility management tasks between the first and second wireless cellular protocol software stacks when the first and second subscriber identity modules are each associated with the same wireless network provider either as a serving carrier or as a roaming carrier. Mobility management tasks that are shared include one or more of paging channel monitoring, measuring a serving cell and/or neighbor cells, evaluating cell reselection and handover options, and reading broadcast channels.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for dynamically changing coverage modes and/or communication bandwidth in a wireless communication system. According to some embodiments, a wireless device may attach to a serving cell associated with a cellular network. A volume of data for upcoming communication with the cellular network may be determined. An indication of a requested communication bandwidth may be provided to the serving cell. The wireless device may communicate data with the serving cell using the requested communication bandwidth. In some instances, a request for narrowband communication bandwidth may result in use of a coverage enhancement mode, while a request for wideband communication bandwidth may result in use of a normal coverage mode.

Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods for a wireless device to perform simultaneous uplink activity for multiple RATs in the same carrier using multiplexing at a layer above the physical layer. The wireless device may establish wireless links with first and second base stations, respectively, according to first and second radio access technologies (RATs), respectively. The first base station may provide a first cell operating in a first system bandwidth and the second base station may provide a second cell operating in a second system bandwidth. The wireless device may determine whether inter-RAT uplink coexistence in the same frequency band is enabled. If so, the wireless device may perform uplink activity for both the first RAT and the second RAT in the first system bandwidth by multiplexing uplink data for the first RAT and uplink data for the second RAT at a layer above the physical layer.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods to reuse wireless circuitry to communicate with multiple wireless networks to support multiple subscriber identities in a wireless communication device are disclosed. A representative method includes receiving signaling messages for a second subscriber identity from a second wireless network while connected to a first wireless network for a first subscriber identity. A portion of radio frequency wireless circuitry is reconfigured to communicate with the second wireless network to establish a signaling channel and respond to signaling messages received from the second wireless network. The portion of radio frequency wireless circuitry is reconfigured between the first and second wireless networks to maintain a connection with the first wireless network while also receiving from the second wireless network limited information that can be provided to a user. Representative information includes an indication of an originator of a mobile terminated connection request and short message service data.

Abstract: Mechanisms enabling link-budget-limited (LBL) devices to more effectively perform random access may include: (1) broadcasting a Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) configuration index (PCI) reserved for LBL devices; (2) configuring LBL devices to use a PCI that is offset from the conventional PCI of current cell; (3) configuring LBL devices to transmit PRACH messages using an alternative set of subframes, different from conventionally-defined subframe set; (4) configuring LBL devices to transmit PRACH messages on odd frames when the conventional PRACH configuration specifies even frames; (5) configuring LBL devices to generate and use extra PRACH preambles that are not used by non-LBL devices; (6) configuring LBL devices to use group B preambles while non-LBL devices are configured to use group A preambles; and (7) boosting power of a random access response message after an Nth random access failure with preamble conforming to an LBL-reserved pattern of preambles.

Abstract: An accessory wireless device partakes in a data session with a remote device. The data session may be a voice call or other service. To preserve the battery power of the accessory wireless device, the accessory wireless device opportunistically offloads medium-to-long range radio transmission and reception tasks to the companion wireless device while maintaining call continuity. The accessory wireless device and the companion wireless device communicate through a local connection. In one embodiment, the accessory wireless device pushes a wireless wide area network (WWAN) connection to the companion device by sharing selected security and network information with the companion wireless device. When the accessory device and/or the companion device determine that the local connection may not be sustainable, the accessory device pulls the WWAN connection of the companion device back to itself.
