A CONTINUOUS PROCESS FOR THE HALOGENATION OF MELT SPUN FILAMENTS CONSISTS OF EXTRUDING THE FILAMENTS DIRECTLY INTO A GASEOUS ATMOSPHERE COMPRISING A HALOGEN GAS WHICH ENABLES HALOGENATION TO BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT THE NEED FOR EXTRANEOUS HALOGENATION INITIATORS.

Polypropylene fibres (see Division B5) may be dyed with a mordant, acid, metallized acid or disperse dye. Dyeing may be carried out for 1 1/2 hrs at the b.p. in a bath containing 2.5% of dye based on the fibre with a fibre/bath ratio of 1 : 40, 0.2% of glacial acetic acid being added after 30 min. Acid or metallized acid dyeing may be carried out in the presence of 3% of ammonium acetate and 1% of an ethylene oxide-alkyl phenol condensate as surface active agent. Disperse dyeing may be carried out in the presence of 2% of surface active agent.
