The present disclosure relates to systems and processes for automatically adjusting the white point of displayed images to account for changes in ambient light. In one embodiment, a display system includes a display device having sensors for recording the red (R), green (G) and blue (B) values for ambient light and measuring the intensity of such light. The sensors feed these values into a processor, which calculates R, G, B gain values to be applied to the video input R, G, B values. In this manner, the display device can account for changes in ambient light to adjust the perceived white point accordingly. Related methods for automatically adjusting the white point of a perceived image are also described.

A microcomputer calculates correction values so that the balance of the detected color levels of the reflected light match the balance of the predesignated color levels for the red, green and blue in the ideal white that are stored in a flash memory. A method and system for automatically adjusting a backlight intensity level for displays is disclosed. The system and method are implemented in electronic devices having a camera and digital backlit displays, such that the camera is used to determine an ambient light level and the backlight level is adjusted according to the determined ambient light level. In particular, when the camera is not in use for capturing images by the user, the automatic backlight adjustment system captures a first image with the camera to determine an initial ambient light level, and then captures a second image with the camera at a later time to determine a subsequent ambient light level. The subsequent and initial ambient light levels are compared to each other and the backlight intensity level is either increased or decreased a predetermined amount for optimal viewing and low power consumption. Backlight intensity determination can be performed on the basis of a single image instead of a differential between two images.

The present invention includes a camera mounted in close proximity to a video display device having a display screen, and oriented to point towards a user. The camera is connected to a control unit capable of image processing and of adjusting the images displayed on the display screen. Light from the proximately located light source falls upon the display screen causing glare from the light source and forming reflection images of the user and other objects on the display screen. In order to eliminate these undesirable reflection images from the display screen, the control unit first locates the reflection images on the display screen, and then eliminates these images by adjusting the brightness values of the reflection images' pixels.

A method and an apparatus performs contrast processing so that the contrast of a video signal displayed on a low contrast display device is improved. The apparatus and method prevent the picture from becoming whitish and from having its apparent contrast reduced, even when external light is present. The apparatus comprises a brightness level converting part for converting the brightness level of a picture to a brightness level which can be displayed with a low contrast display device. The apparatus further includes a contrast improving part for improving the contrast by superimposing a waveform on the input signal to create an optical illusion of a brightness level. A brightness level compensating part is also provided for compensating the brightness value of the light and dark parts of the brightness varying portions in the video input signal so that the light parts get darker and the dark parts get lighter.
