    Abstract: An internal combustion engine controller for controlling an internal combustion engine is provided. The internal combustion engine controller comprises a memory and a processor. The memory is configured to store a plurality of control maps, each control map defining a hypersurface of actuator setpoints for controlling an actuator of the internal combustion engine based on a plurality of input variables to the internal combustion engine controller. The processor comprises an engine setpoint module and a map updating module. The map updating module is configured to optimise one or more of the hypersurfaces of the control maps at the location defined by the plurality of input variables. The map updating module comprises an optimiser module configured to search for an optimised group of actuator setpoints wherein the map updating module updates the one or more hypersurfaces at the location defined by the plurality of input variables based on the optimised group of actuator setpoints. A method of controlling an internal combustion engine is also provided.

    Abstract: A method of monitoring the usage of an internal combustion engine comprises performing an engine monitoring routine using a local monitoring device attached to an internal combustion engine. The engine monitoring routine includes generating data representative of a plurality of vibrations of an internal combustion engine using a vibration sensor of the local monitoring device, processing the generated data to determine a first value representative of a firing frequency of the internal combustion engine, generating an aggregated summary based on the first value and transmitting the aggregated summary and identification data for the local monitoring device to a remote application. The remote application processes the transmitted aggregated summary based on the identification data to determine engine speed usage data.

    Abstract: A method of controlling a cylinder cut-out mode for an engine comprising the steps of: a) activating a cylinder cut-out mode in which one or more cylinders of the engine are deactivated; b) while the cylinder cut-out mode is active, monitoring one or more deactivation variables; the one or more deactivation variables comprising one or more of: an inlet manifold air temperature; an engine load factor; an engine speed; and an engine coolant temperature; and c) deactivating the cylinder cut-out mode in order to reactivate any deactivated cylinders when at least one of the deactivation variables exceeds its threshold value.

    Abstract: An engine assembly comprises: an internal combustion engine having: a combustion chamber; an air inlet for supplying air to the combustion chamber; a fuel injector for supplying fuel to the combustion chamber; an exhaust outlet for releasing exhaust gas from the combustion chamber and a rotatable drive shaft, wherein combustion of fuel in air within the combustion chamber results in rotation of the drive shaft. The engine assembly further comprises: a turbocharger system comprising: a turbine configured to recover energy from exhaust gas provided via the exhaust gas outlet; and a turbocharger compressor configured to receive energy from the turbine and thereby to compress air for use in combustion of fuel in the combustion chamber. The engine assembly further comprises: a supercharger system comprising a supercharger compressor configured to receive kinetic energy from the drive shaft and to compress air for use in combustion in the combustion chamber. The engine assembly further comprises: a flywheel configured for kinetic energy storage; a first linkage between the drive shaft and the flywheel, wherein the linkage comprises a variable belt drive; and a second linkage between the first linkage and the supercharger compressor.

    Abstract: An end can assembly for an engine exhaust aftertreatment canister comprises an end can formed from an end plate and a wall extending from a periphery of the end plate, the end plate and the wall having a first cutaway portion formed therein. A pipe is provided in the first cutaway portion and attached to the end can around the first cutaway portion to form a seal with the end can, the pipe having at least one opening provided therein which opens into an interior of the end can assembly. A bracket, comprising a plate and a shoulder extending at an angle from the plate, is attached to the end plate and to the wall, the shoulder having a second cutaway portion formed therein which is shaped to receive the pipe whereby the shoulder abuts the pipe and provides structural support to the pipe and end can.

    Abstract: The present disclosure is directed towards an engine assembly comprising a crankcase, a crankshaft, a lubrication system and fluid guide arrangement. During rotation the crankshaft is configured to drive a crankcase fluid flow in a crankcase chamber. The lubrication system comprises a lubricant drain for a drain fluid flow therethrough extending to a drain aperture at the crankcase chamber. The fluid guide arrangement is located adjacent or in proximity to the drain aperture. The fluid guide arrangement is configured for guiding crankcase fluid flow away from the drain aperture and/or for reducing the pressure of the crankcase fluid flow past the drain aperture, such that drain fluid flows from the lubricant drain.
