A process for forming an elastomeric polymer gel composition includes forming a blend by combining a poly(alkenyl-co-maleimide) that includes a maleimide and at least one monomer contributed unit derived from vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons, R1R2 ethylenes, and alkyl vinyl ethers; with a maleated polyalkylene. This is followed by addition of a crosslinking agent, which is allowed to react with the poly(alkenyl-co-maleimide) and maleated polyalkylene to form a polyalkyenyl grafted poly(alkenyl-co-maleimide). The polyalkenyl grafted poly(alkenyl-co-maleimide) is further blended with a polyester.

There are disclosed a block copolymer of at least one elastomeric block and at least one syndiotactic polystyrene block which comprises 100 parts by weight of a polymer component comprising 1 to 80% by weight of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) block(s) and 99 to 20% by weight of rubbery elastomeric block(s) and at least 30 parts by weight of an extender. These extended block copolymer compositions display the characteristics of thermoplastic elastomers and are useful for high temperature applications possessing unique softness.

A method for performing a one-pot synthesis of a blend of nanoparticles and liquid polymer includes polymerizing a first monomer and optionally a second monomer in a hydrocarbon solvent to form the liquid polymer. The polymerization is terminated before completion with a quenching agent. Then a charge of polymerization initiator, and a mixture of cross-linking agent and mono-vinyl aromatic monomer are added. This causes further polymerization whereby nanoparticles are formed having a core including the cross-linking agent, and a shell including the first monomer or the first monomer and the second monomer. Nanoparticle/liquid polymer blends resulting from the method and rubber compositions incorporating the blends are also disclosed.

In addition, a method of making a rubber composition includes combining a polar solvent, a base, and a carboxylic acid and mixing these to form a Solution A. A source of metal ions in solution is added to Solution A, whereby mixing forms Product A. The metal in the source of metal ions is selected from the group consisting of metals with an oxidation state of +3 or +4. Provided are enophile functionalized polymer particles, nano-sized inorganic metal particles such as Al(OH)3 particles, and preparations thereof. Also provided is a method of improving the properties of a rubber composition, such as a tire, by formulating the rubber to incorporate nano-sized inorganic metal particles such as Al(OH)3. The composition exhibits improved properties including bonding rubber, tensile strength, tear strength, and wet traction, among others. A novel rubber composition comprising nano-sized inorganic metal particles is also disclosed.
