Abstract:
The present invention includes a welding jig having a first support plate and a second support plate rotatably connected to the first support plate. The second support plate has a template-shaped perimeter including arcuately shaped segments shaped to support pipe fittings of different sizes. By selectively positioning a particular segment and securing locking the particular segment in place, a particular pipe fitting such as a particular 90.degree. pipe elbow can be supported with one end resting on the selected particular segment and the other end resting on the first support plate. By this arrangement, particular pipe fitting can be supported in a predetermined and square position relative to a pipe, thus facilitating welding the particular pipe elbow to the pipe. This allows substantially a one-person welding operation.
Abstract:
A novel method for sealing the end of tubing connected to and extending from a container housing workpieces to be thermally processed using mechanical as well as thermal means. The invention also contemplates a novel tubing member for connection to such a container, where the sealing material is disposed within the tubing member prior to insertion of the tubing into the container. After fixing the tubing in the container, a plurality of locations along the length of the tubing are identified where mechanical closure of the tubing is effected. Then, the tubing is heated to a temperature sufficiently high to melt the contained sealing material at the crushed locations, such that a metallurgical seal is formed inside the tubing at the crushed locations.
Abstract:
A first tube of rectangular cross section is joined to a second tube by notching the first tube on two sides to assure that the top and bottom walls of the first tube touch the rounded corner of the second tube at a central location to define a weld receiving groove and to eliminate the gap between the abutted tubes for repeatable, well defined welds. To avoid large fixtures and structural locators adjacent a weld location, a small tab is provided in the notched end of the first tube. An oversized laser-cut slot in the side of the second tube receives the tab and has one slot boundary precisely located with respect to a reference point on the second tube. The first tube is urged in the direction to force the tab against the boundary and positively locate the first tube with respect to the reference point.
Abstract:
An apparatus for forming metal tubes is shown in which a metal strip 2 is passed through the apparatus and is formed by a combination of rollers 17, 17', 19, and dies 15, 24 into a shape defining a tube. Prior to the completion of the formation of the metal strip 2 into a shape defining a tube, a brazing wire 1 is supplied through rollers 8 onto the metal strip 2 between two edge portions thereof to be bonded together. The edge portions are bonded together by means of a frictional wheel 27 rotating at high speed.
Abstract:
An automated method of brazing to join two metal parts together at a joint with a braze alloy. The two parts are moved to a brazing station and maintained in a fixed position. The two metal parts are heated at the joint at a high heat rate to a predetermined temperature which exceeds the temperature that would melt the braze alloy and less than a temperature that would cause degradation of the metal parts. The temperature of the metal parts in close proximity to the joint is detected and when the first predetermined temperature is reached, the heating rate is reduced to a lower heat rate sufficient to keep the braze alloy in a liquidous state. The braze alloy is introduced to the joint between the two metal parts while they are being heated at the lower heat rate to join the two parts together and then the joined two metal parts are removed from the brazing station.
Abstract:
A mobile robotic platform and guide means therefor having a carriage with one or more uniquely constructed drive rollers having radially-extending metal filaments embedded in a complaint material and which coact with a track defining the guide means which has a length of textured material, such as wire mesh secured thereto. The coaction provides an infinite pitch rack drive. The mobile robotic platform can have the carriage thereof provided with two or more tractor units pivotally mounted thereto and each of which carry a pair of the aforesaid drive rollers whereby the carriage can follow guide means of varying contours with controlled travel and continuous operation of an operative device carried by the carriage.
Abstract:
A metal brazing sleeve includes a ceramic flux band formed on the sleeve adjacent an annular recess typically disposed near an open end of the sleeve for receiving a conventional braze preform, by adhering a powder flux to the sleeve by a tacky adhesive and then melting the powder flux in place, by internal heating of the tube. The ceramic flux band is hard and adherent, and resistant to abrasion effects during insertion of the sleeve into a tube, and provides a shadow effect for protecting an optional cemented powder flux band which may be formed on the braze ring.
Abstract:
A laser processing system consists of three dedicated work stations for cutting to length a family of parts such as exhaust pipes. The processing center includes three laser stations each having a laser beam rotator that receives a laser beam and directs it into a cutting plane for processing the products at each of the stations. These stations are selectively operated by use of an improved laser beam delivery system including a beam sharing platform that is programmed to selectively deliver a laser beam output to each of the work stations for processing products. The beam sharing platform includes a plurality of separate angularly adjustable, presettable mirror units that can be precisely aligned with the pipe delivery system and matched to the processing requirements of a given work station.
Abstract:
Apparatus for manipulating a welding torch independently along two axes. A torch support is provided to carry a welding torch or the like, and a motor is operatively coupled to position the torch support along a first path of travel relative to the weld joint. Another motor is operatively coupled to position the torch along a second path of travel orthogonal to the first path of travel.
Abstract:
An improved method for manufacturing a heat transfer assembly particularly useful as a component of a radiator used to remove heat from the coolant of an internal combustion engine. The heat transfer assembly includes a plurality of louvered fin strips having fold edges that are in heat transfer contact, through solder joints, with flat-sided tubes designed to carry the fluid to be cooled by a flow of air contacting both the exterior surfaces of the tubes and the fin strip surfaces. The improved method involves the application of beads of solder to the fold edges of the fin strips, rather than to the tubes as in the prior art, before assembly of the fin strips and the tubes. The improved method reduces the amount of solder required and thereby reduces manufacturing cost.
