摘要: Methods and devices for measuring the size of a body lumen and a method for ablating tissue that uses the measurement to normalize delivery of ablational energy from an expandable operative element to a luminal target of varying circumference are provided. The method includes inserting into the lumen an expandable operative element having circuitry with resistivity or inductance that varies according to the circumference of the operative element, varying the expansion of the operative element with an expansion medium, measuring the resistivity of the circuitry, and relating the resistivity or inductance to a value for the circumference of the operative element. In some embodiments the sizing circuit includes a conductive elastomer wrapped around the operative element. Other embodiments of the method apply to operative elements that include an overlapping energy delivery element support in which the overlap varies inversely with respect to the state of expansion, and which is configured with sizing electrodes that sense the amount of the overlap.

摘要: Methods and devices for blocking orifices and occluding cavities within a patient are provided. The device in one variation comprises first and second tubular members attached to a collapsible sealing element. The device can be placed through an orifice and the collapsible sealing element can be collapsed to seal the orifice. An embolic may be introduced distal to the sealing element to occlude a cavity. The device may incorporate a locking mechanism which can be engaged to lock the sealing element into the collapsed position. The device may incorporate a valve to prevent flow through the tubular members, for example to prevent egress of the embolic from a cavity. The device can be detached to provide a permanent seal of the orifice, and can retain the embolic within the cavity. The device may be used in conjunction with a stent or other retention device to assist the sealing element in maintaining the seal.

摘要: The present invention involves a magnetic embolization apparatus and method for embolizing an aneurysm of a blood vessel. The magnetic embolization apparatus includes a catheter having a distal portion adapted for insertion within an aneurysm of a blood vessel, a permanent magnet carried by the distal portion of the catheter to internally induce a magnetic field from within the aneurysm to control a magnetic field controllable embolic to embolize the aneurysm, and an electromagnet carried by the distal portion of the catheter to internally induce a magnetic field to control delivery of the magnetic field controllable embolic. The method includes delivering a magnetic-field controllable embolic into an aneurysm, inducing a magnetic field in the aneurysm to control the magnetic-field controllable embolic to embolize the aneurysm with the permanent magnet of the catheter, and controlling the delivery of the magnetic-field controllable embolic into the aneurysm with an electromagnet.

摘要: This is an implant for placement in the human body and an assembly for so placing that implant. Most desirably, it is an implant for use in the vasculature of the human body and is used to occlude some space in that vasculature as a portion of a treatment regimen. The implant itself is preferably a component of a deployment device using an electrolytically severable joint. The implant is electrically isolated from the electrolytically severable joint by a highly resistive or insulative layer. Such isolation and minimization of the conductive pathway from the placement apparatus to the body's fluids appears to enhance the susceptibility of the electrolytic joint to quick erosion and detachment of the implant from the deployment media. Although the implant itself is preferably a vaso-occlusive device, it may instead be a stent, a vena cava filter, or other implant which may be installed in this manner.

摘要: This is a catheter device for delivering vaso-occlusive materials or devices to a desired site with the body. The catheter is a single lumen valved balloon catheter that enhances the accurate placement of the vaso-occlusive material or device. The balloon may be positioned such that it blocks the opening to a vascular malformation such as an aneurysm. In one embodiment, the balloon is automatically inflated as the vaso-occlusive material or device engages a constrictive feature near the distal end as the device is discharged. The catheter device may also have a lengthened distal section that may be placed within the malformation or aneurysm to improving the filling capability of the device. The catheter device may be constructed to have a number of advantageous radioopaque markers to aid in accurately discharging the vaso-occlusive material or device.
