Abstract: A brake crawler for an elevator-type hard disk drive generally includes a first and second set of clamp arms vertically arranged, each of the first and second sets of clamp arms being capable of exerting a clamping force on a shaft or slider via activation or deactivation of an actuator element associated with each set of clamp arms. The brake crawler further includes an actuator element disposed between the first and second set of clamp arms which allows for movement of the first set of clamp arms away from the second set of clamp arms upon a change in state of the actuator element. Via a specific sequence of activating and deactivating various of the actuator elements associated with the brake crawler, the brake crawler is capable of inch worm-type movement up and down the shaft.

Abstract: A recording head includes a nanorod configured to heat a hotspot on a recording media, a plasmonic plate configured to concentrate an electric field to excite the nanorod, and a heat sink configured to dissipate heat from the nanorod. The recording head includes a first diffusion barrier plate configured to resist diffusion of materials between the plasmonic plate and the nanorod and a second diffusion barrier plate configured to resist diffusion of materials between the heat sink and the nanorod. The first diffusion barrier plate is disposed between the nanorod and the plasmonic plate and is coupled to a bottom surface of the nanorod. The second diffusion barrier plate is disposed between the heat sink and the nanorod and is coupled to the top surface of the nanorod.

Abstract: A background operation is internally triggered by firmware of a disk drive. During a training phase defined by a. first time period, access latency of host commands is monitored during rotational position sorting command selection. During a sorting phase after the training phase, a sorting threshold is defined based on the access latencies measured during the training phase. The background command is selected for execution in the sorting phase if the seek and rotational latency is less than the sorting threshold.

Abstract: ECC is used to for controlling errors in blocks of data by including a measure of redundancy within the data for recovering one or more unreadable portions of the data. A codeword includes at least a message and one or more additional ECC blocks. In the event of an unreadable sector, the ECC is decoded and used to recover the erroneous or missing portion(s) of the message. With disc access parallelism, ECCs can now be distributed across data storage surfaces and/or multiple storage platters. Distribution of ECCs increases the likelihood of recovering data from a head failure or from burst errors on a data storage surface and adds the option to decode parity after only 1/n revolutions.

Abstract: Hard errors are determined for an unsuccessful decoding of codeword bits read from NAND memory cells via a read channel and input to a low-density parity check (LDPC) decoder. A bit error rate (BER) for the hard errors is estimated and BER for the read channel is estimated. Hard error regions are found using a single level cell (SLC) reading of the NAND memory cells. A log likelihood ratio (LLR) mapping of the codeword bits input to the LDPC decoder is changed based on the hard error regions, the hard error BER, and/or the read channel BER.

An optical isolator is disposed over the gap portion.

Abstract: A system includes an environment-aware storage drive comprising one or more storage medium with a location-based service wherein the environment-aware storage drive generates a signal containing information about a location of the storage drive relative to a geo-fenced area and updates a ledger unit of an event happening to the storage drive based on the signal, wherein the event is related to the current environment of the storage drive. The ledger unit keeps track of a number of events and/or data received from the environment-aware storage drive. A policy unit determines an expandable set of security policies for the storage drive triggered by the event and/or data, wherein the security policies specify access restrictions to the environment-aware storage drive based on its current environment. The policy unit transmits and enforces the set of security policies on the environment-aware storage drive to prevent data from being theft from the storage drive.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for storing data in a non-volatile memory (NVM), such as a flash memory in a solid-state drive (SSD). In some embodiments, a distributed storage space of the NVM is defined to extend across a plural number of regions of the NVM. A non-standard parity data set is provided having a plural number of data elements greater than or equal to the plural number of regions in the storage space. The data set is written by storing a first portion of the data elements and a first parity value to the plural number of regions and a remaining portion of the data elements and a second parity value to a subset of the plural number of regions. The regions can comprise semiconductor dies in a flash memory, and the distributed storage space can be a garbage collection unit formed using one erasure block from each flash die.
