Abstract: An electronic device such as a head-mounted device may have displays. The display may have regions of lower (L) and higher (M, H) resolution to reduce data bandwidth and power consumption for the display while preserving satisfactory image quality. Data lines may be shared by lower and higher resolution portions of a display or different portions of a display with different resolutions may be supplied with different numbers of data lines. Data line length may be varied in transition regions between lower resolution and higher resolution portions of a display to reduce visible discontinuities between the lower and higher resolution portions. The lower and higher resolution portions of the display may be dynamically adjusted using dynamically adjustable gate driver circuitry and dynamically adjustable data line driver circuitry.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display having a backlight with light sources of different colors. The electronic device may include a color ambient light sensor that measures the color of ambient light and control circuitry that adjusts the color of light emitted from the backlight based on the color of ambient light. The light sources may include at least first and second light-emitting diodes that emit light having different color temperatures. The control circuitry may adjust the intensity of light emitted from the first light-emitting diode relative to the intensity of light emitted from the second light-emitting diode to produce a backlight color that more closely matches the color of ambient light. The first and second light-emitting diodes may include an ultraviolet light-emitting diode die and a blue light-emitting diode die that are mounted in a common semiconductor package.

Abstract: An electronic device display may have an organic light-emitting diode layer that emits light to form images for a user. Reflective structures such as metal signal lines may be present in the organic light-emitting diode layer. Ambient light reflections from the metal signal lines may be suppressed using a circular polarizer on the organic light-emitting diode layer. To increase light emission efficiency from the organic light-emitting diode display layer under low ambient light conditions in which ambient light reflections are not significant, the polarization efficiency of the circular polarizer may be reduced. Control circuitry may make measurements of ambient light intensity using an ambient light sensor and can control the polarization efficiency of the circular polarizer accordingly by applying adjustable amounts of light or electric field. Polarization efficiency may also be adjusted using a photosensitive polarizer material that responds directly to changes in ambient light level.

Abstract: An organic light-emitting diode may have transparent electrodes. An organic emissive layer may be interposed between the electrodes. The emissive layer may emit light in response to current injected from the electrodes. The organic light-emitting diode electrodes may cover an electrode area. The electrode area may be square or may have other shapes. To enhance brightness uniformity, portions of the electrodes in a peripheral region (H1, H2) of the electrode area may have higher sheet resistances than a central portion of the electrode area. The electrode area may be square and may have four corners. The higher sheet resistances may be associated with regions of the electrode area adjacent to the corners. Elevated sheet resistances may be produced by forming the electrodes with different thicknesses in different areas or by providing supplemental conductive structures (104) in selected areas of the electrode area.

Abstract: A display may have a first stage such as a color liquid crystal display stage and a second stage such as a monochromatic liquid crystal display stage that are coupled in tandem so that light from a backlight passes through both stages. The pixel pitch of the second stage may be greater than the pixel pitch of the first stage to ease alignment tolerances and reduce image processing complexity. The first stage may be provided with straight black masking strips, whereas the second stage may be provided with angled zigzagging black masking strips. The angle of the zigzagging black masking strips and the ratio of the pixel pitch of the second stage to that of the first stage may be selected to maximize optical transmittance while minimizing Moire effects.

Abstract: A polarizer integrated with conductive material and a process for forming a polarizer integrated with conductive material are disclosed. A polarizer can be integrated with conductive material to form a portion of a touch sensor panel. In one example, a layer of conductive film forming either the row or column traces can be patterned on a surface of a substrate in the polarizer. In another example, the layer of conductive film can be patterned on a viewing angle compensation film of the polarizer. One or more of the polarizer's polarizing layer, protective substrates or viewing angle compensation film can act as a dielectric between the conductive material forming the rows and column traces in the stack-up. As a result, the clear polymer spacer acting as a dielectric in touch panels can be removed, reducing the thickness of the touch screen stack-up.

Abstract: A layer of liquid crystal material may be interposed between display layers. The display layers may include thin-film transistor circuitry having subpixel electrodes for applying electric fields to subpixel portions of the layer of liquid crystal material. Subpixels of different colors may have different shapes and may have different liquid crystal layer thicknesses. These subpixel differences may be configured to slow the switching speed of subpixels of a certain color relative to other subpixels to reduce color motion blur when an object is moved across a black or colored background. The subpixels may have chevron shapes. Subpixels of a first color may have chevron shapes that are less bent than subpixels of second and third colors. In configurations with varying liquid crystal layer thicknesses, the subpixels of the first color may have thicker liquid crystal layers than the subpixels of the second and third colors.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display, display control circuitry that operates the display, and a color ambient light sensor that gathers ambient light information. Display color cast may be adjusted based on the ambient light information. When the color of ambient light is within an acceptable range of colors, the color cast of the display may be adjusted to more closely match the color of ambient light. When the color of ambient light is outside of the acceptable range of colors, display control circuitry may determine an adjusted ambient light color that is within the acceptable range. The adjusted ambient light color may have the same color temperature as the measured ambient light color. After determining an adjusted ambient light color that is within the acceptable range, the color cast of the display may be adjusted to more closely match the adjusted ambient light color.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display mounted in a housing. Color ambient light sensors may make measurements of ambient light intensity and color through windows in an inactive border region of the display or other portions of the device. The electronic device may process the ambient light measurements based on ambient light information from the ambient light sensors and based on information from additional sensors such as an image sensor, a force sensor, a capacitive touch sensor, a proximity sensor, an orientation sensor, and other devices. Control circuitry in the electronic device may produce reliable ambient light measurements by combining readings from multiple reliable sources and by discarding readings from ambient light sensors that are blocked by a user's fingers or other external objects. Display color cast and intensity may be adjusted based on ambient light information.

Abstract: An electronic device may include a display having an array of display pixels and having display control circuitry that controls the operation of the display. The display control circuitry may operate the display in different modes. In a paper mode, display control circuitry may use stored spectral reflectance data to adjust display colors such that the colors appear as they would on a printed sheet of paper. In a low light mode when the ambient light level is below a threshold, the light emitted from the display may be adjusted to mimic the appearance of an incandescent light source. In a bright light mode when the ambient light level exceeds a threshold, the light emitted from the display may be adjusted to maximize readability in bright light. The target white point of the display may be adjusted based on which mode the display is operating in.
