Abstract:
The present invention is directed toward a method for improving the tuft bind of yarn in textile coverings. The method comprises applying to the yarn, prior to applying an adhesive, a functional amount of an aqueous dispersion comprising a surfactant and/or polymeric component wherein the aqueous dispersion has a surface tension approximately equal to or less than the surface tension of the yarn. The present invention also is directed toward a textile covering having improved tuft bind prepared by the aforementioned method. The method is advantageously employed in the preparation of floor coverings to maintain the original appearance and resist the loss of pile or a condition known as pill and fuzzing.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a precoat resin dispersion having a solids content from about 63% to about 69% comprising (1) at least one resin having a Ring and Ball softening point from about 60.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C. in an aqueous dispersion having a solids content from about 53% to about 58%; (2) at least one water-soluble polymer; (3) at least one cationic resin; and (4) water. The precoat resin dispersion is useful in the manufacture of tufted carpets, especially carpets manufactured with carboxylated latices as a backcoat.
Abstract:
Substrates having a backing of fine celled polyurethane foam are prepared by applying to the back of the substrate a frothed polyurethane forming composition containing small amounts of a silicone surfactant having an average molecular weight below about 30,000 which provides the resultant foam with a cell count value of greater than about 16 per 0.0025 square inches and wherein the unfilled, unfrothed liquid components of said polyurethane forming composition obtains a viscosity of greater than 10,000 centipoise in less than 40 minutes at 25.degree. C.
Abstract:
A fire suppressant composition is provided for particular use in polyurethane backed carpets for airplanes which suppressant comprises a combination of (1) an organic filler composition comprising (a) a hydrated alumina compound, (b) a hydrated zinc borate, (c) an inorganic lead-containing compound and (d) an inorganic antimony-containing compound and (2) a halogen-containing resin.
Abstract:
An automobile floor mat designed to reduce movement of the mat relative to the floor having a relatively stiff portion and a second portion having a relatively flexible portion, the stiff and second portions each having base portions of monolithic elastomeric materials connected in a hinge area so that the mat can be molded in a single molding operation. The relative difference in rigidity permits the flexible portion to bend relative to the stiff portion and can be accomplished by materials of different thickness or rigidity or both.
Abstract:
Tufted or woven article having a unitary backing is prepared by applying to the underside of a tufted or woven textile article, a polyurethane-forming composition comprising(A) a relatively high molecular weight polyether polyol;(B) a relatively low molecular weight polyol;(C) an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate;(D) an inorganic filler component. The present invention describes a carpet comprising (I) a primary backing; (II) a yarn tufted or woven through said primary backing thereby creating a yarn bundle on the underside of the resultant tufted or woven textile article and (III) a polyurethane composition applied to the underside thereby encapsulating the yarn bundles and adhering the yarn bundles to the primary backing; said polyurethane composition comprising the catalyzed reaction product of the composition described above.
Abstract:
An area rug having an upper loop or pile surface and a secondary backing having a thin, open cell urethane backing adhered thereto to lessen the tendency of the area rug to crawl on the undersurface while maintaining total thickness no greater than 10% greater than the thickness of the primary rug.
Abstract:
Polymeric blends comprising a rubber latex and large particle size solid polyvinyl chloride resin provide good tuft lock in tufted carpets and enhance flame retardancy of same. The blend is applied to the carpet and dried at an elevated temperature below the flux temperature of the polyvinyl chloride resin.
Abstract:
An improved carpet tile for commercial, industrial or home use is disclosed. The carpet tile includes a carpet pile yarn facing portion including a stiffening and stabilizing layer (e.g., glass fiber layer). The backing portion also includes a stiffening and stabilizing layer (e.g., glass fiber layer). Interposed between the facing and backing portions is a stabilizing layer of a mixture of from about 70 to about 90 weight percent non-woven glass fibers and from about 30 to about 10 weight percent of a polyester. The resulting unitary carpet tile shows surprising dimensional stability, stiffness and floor hugging properties even during periods of concentrated stress, and passes rigorous flame retardancy and smoke emission tests.
Abstract:
Wet steam or hot water treatment of a secondary backing just before application to an aqueous adhesive coated back of a carpet or rug such as a tufted carpet containing a primary backing provides on drying and curing of the laminate an increase in many instances in the dry and wet strength of the secondary backing to the primary backing and some reduction in the time of drying or curing of the adhesive to bond the laminate together.
