Abstract: Apparatus and methods for providing multi-tier quasi-licensed spectrum wireless service via a common wireless access node such as a small-cell. In one embodiment, the quasi-licensed system utilizes multi-sector antennae to create antenna lobes adaptively according to parameters associated with different cell sectors, such as user traffic, random access requests, and/or interference. In one variant, when the user traffic or interference is determined to be very high in a particular sector, the sector is configured and activated based on the availability of low-noise spectrum. In another variant, when a new sector is created, the electrical power resources available for that sector are checked, and based on the amount of power available at that sector, either CBSD Category A or B status is allocated to that sector.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods and apparatus for managing downlink channels and/or bandwidth in wireless systems. An exemplary method wireless communications method embodiments includes the steps of: monitoring, by a wireless base station, a downlink channel utilization rate of data transmissions from the wireless base station to a first customer premises equipment (CPE) device on a downlink shared channel to detect a first condition; and upon detecting, by the wireless base station, that the first condition exists, switching from operating in a first wireless base station mode of operation to operating in a second wireless base station mode of operation, said switching from operating in a first mode of operation to operating in a second mode of operation including switching from using a downlink control channel for transmitting downlink control information to the first CPE device to using the downlink control channel for transmitting user data.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for enhancing performance of a wireline communication network backhaul for wireless nodes based on data traffic and node characterization. In one embodiment, the node comprises a small-cell or other wireless base station (e.g., one utilizing unlicensed or quasi-licensed spectrum such as CBRS or C-Band) that is backhauled by a DOCSIS system within a managed HFC network, and the methods and apparatus utilize such factors as traffic load, geographic or topological location, node technology type, and user device profile for each node to determine scheduling of traffic over the wireline transmission medium used for the delivery of services. In another embodiment, the foregoing factors can be weighted for further determination related to an assignment of the time slots or other resources for the delivery of services.

Abstract: Detect, at a cable/fiber broadband network termination unit of a cable/fiber broadband multi-service operator, an interruption in service to a cable/fiber broadband network customer unit—small cell pair. Responsive to termination unit advising the charging server, the charging server advises a backend server of an associated cellular network of a customer identifier corresponding to the account identifier. Responsive to the charging server advising the backend server, the backend server advises a policy control function of the associated cellular network to modify network parameters of the associated cellular network to compensate for the interruption in service.

Abstract: Various embodiments comprise systems, methods, mechanisms, and apparatus adapting Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic flows between a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a plurality of cable modems (CMs) connected thereto via respective CMTS-CM TCP connections supported by respective CMTS-CM communication links. Each CMTS-CM communication link is monitored to determine Quality of Service (QoS) information including jitter information. If the jitter information associated with a particular CMTS-CM communications link exceeds a threshold level (e.g., a level where TCP ACK/NACK reception timeout may occur), then the TCP connection(s) supported by the communication link are adapted to function in a non-normative manner by, illustratively, increasing downlink and/or uplink throughput of TCP connections supported by the communications link irrespective of the usual or normative response of the TCP connection(s).

Abstract: Uplink resource allocation in fixed wireless access (FWA) networks using wireless controllers is described. The method includes allocating shared spectrum to a Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) device (CBSD), wirelessly connecting customer premises equipment (CPE) of a FWA network to the CBSD, receiving scheduling requests (SRs) from the CPE, transmitting a grant with allocated uplink resources to the CPE, sending CBSD information, CPE information, and allocated uplink resource information to a wireless controller, transmitting to the CPE a message to use previously allocated uplink resources until a defined event when the CBSD lacks downlink transmission capability, sending instructions to the wireless controller to start monitoring uplink communication channels while the CBSD lacks the downlink transmission capability, sending a request to the CBSD to assign additional uplink resources when determining an increase in uplink communications, and transmitting a grant to the CPE for the additional uplink resources.
