Abstract: A system and method for conservation of battery power in a portable medical device is provided. In one example, a processor arrangement includes a dual core processor having an ARM core and a DSP core. The portable medical device includes a monitor having the dual core processor, in communication with a belt node processor. The DSP core receives physiological data from the physiological sensor and sends the physiological data to the ARM core. The ARM core analyzes the physiological data to determine if a treatment sequence is necessary. The DSP core receives physiological data from the at least one physiological sensor and sends the physiological data to the ARM core, and also analyzes the physiological data to determine proper timing of the treatment sequence by the at least one therapy delivery device to synchronize at least one pulse of the treatment sequence with the physiological data.

Abstract: A remote alarm for use with a wearable medical device. The remote alarm is configured to receive alarms, voice messages and prompts issued by the wearable medical device and to repeat those alarms, voice messages and prompts in a manner that can more easily be perceived by a patient wearing the wearable medical device or a bystander. The remote alarm can be configured to receive a communication from the wearable medical device, and in response, to identify one or more messages to be provided to the patient or a bystander. The messages may be provided audibly, visually, tactilely or combinations thereof. The remote alarm may further be configured to take certain actions depending upon the content of the communication, such as sending a telephone message to alert emergency personnel to the identity, location and medical condition of the patient, or sending an email.

Abstract: A wearable defibrillator includes one or more environmental sensors including an accelerometer, one or more ECG sensors configured to acquire ECG data, and an alarm manager and at least one processor operatively coupled to the one or more ECG sensors and the accelerometer. The at least one processor is configured to detect a cardiac abnormality in the patient, identify a notification having one or more characteristics, and detect an environmental condition of the wearable defibrillator. The accelerometer is configured to detect a presence or lack of patient motion, and/or detect a body position of the patient as the detected environmental condition. The at least one processor is configured to determine whether one or more factors exist that inhibit the patient's ability to recognize the notification, on determining their existence, adapt the one or more characteristics of the notification and provide an adapted notification, and issue the adapted notification.

Abstract: A wearable medical device for determining whether a patient is experiencing a cardiac event using electrocardiogram (ECG) templates includes a plurality of ECG electrodes and a medical device controller. The medical device controller includes a memory, a baseline generator, a cardiac event detector, and a mode selector. The baseline generator is configured to record a baseline ECG signal, generate one or more ECG templates, and store the one or more ECG templates in the memory. The cardiac event detector is configured to select an ECG template and compare a current ECG signal with the selected ECG template to determine whether the patient is experiencing a cardiac arrhythmia. The mode selector is configured to identify whether any ECG templates are stored in the memory, determine whether a new ECG template is needed, and, upon determining that a new ECG template is needed, enter a baselining mode by activating the baseline generator.

Abstract: An electrode assembly that includes an electrically conductive layer, a first impedance reduction system, and a second impedance reduction system. The electrically conductive layer forms an electrode portion of the electrode assembly and a first surface to be placed adjacent a person's skin. The first impedance reduction system is configured to dispense a first amount of an electrically conductive gel onto the first surface of the electrically conductive layer in response to a first activation signal. The second impedance reduction system is configured to dispense a second amount of the electrically conductive gel onto the first surface of the electrically conductive layer in response to a second activation signal.

Abstract: A wearable medical device for detecting and treating life-threatening arrhythmias includes a wearable vest portion, sensing electrodes, therapy pads, at least one motion sensor, and a cardiac monitor. The cardiac monitor is configured to detect whether the patient is experiencing a treatable arrhythmia using an ECG signal and in response, determine a confidence level for the detected treatable arrhythmia using outputs from the at least one motion sensor. Determining the confidence level includes detecting patient motion prior to the detection of the treatable arrhythmia. Determining the confidence level further includes increasing the confidence level in response to determining that the patient is motionless coinciding with the detection of the treatable arrhythmia, or decreasing the confidence level in response to determining the patient motion after the detection of the treatable arrhythmia. The cardiac monitor is configured to determine whether to deliver a treatment shock based on the confidence level.

Abstract: According to at least one example, an ambulatory medical device is provided. The device includes a plurality of electrodes disposed at spaced apart positions about a patient's body and a control unit. The control unit includes a sensor interface, a memory and a processor. The sensor interface is coupled to the plurality of electrodes and configured to receive a first ECG signal from a first pairing of the plurality of electrodes and to receive a second ECG signal from a second pairing of the plurality of electrodes. The memory stores information indicating a preferred pairing, the preferred pairing being either the first pairing or the second pairing. The processor is coupled to the sensor interface and the memory and is configured to resolve conflicts between interpretations of first ECG signal and the second ECG signal in favor of the preferred pairing.
