An epoxidation reaction product formed by the molybdenum catalyzed reaction of propylene with tertiary butyl hydroperoxide to provide propylene oxide and tertiary butyl alcohol is separated by distillation into a propylene fraction, a propylene oxide fraction, a tertiary butyl alcohol fraction and a heavy liquid distillation fraction composed primarily of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, tertiary butyl alcohol, dissolved molybdenum catalyst, and impurities including lower aliphatic C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 carboxylic acids, and the dissolved molybdenum content of the heavy distillation fraction is adjusted to about 300 to 500 ppm of dissolved molybdenum, if necessary, by treatment with a precipitating agent and contacted with a solid adsorbent consisting essentially of a synthetic, porous, high surface area amorphous magnesium silicate.

C. and a pressure of about 0 to 1,000 psig. over a period of about 10 to about 20 hours to provide the corresponding diketone having the formula: ##STR2## wherein R and n have the meaning given above.

A process for the production of detergent range alcohols and ketones by reacting an alkane with a hydroperoxide in the presence of a transition metal porphyrin catalyst is described. Preferred hydroperoxides include cumene hydroperoxide and tertiary butyl hydroperoxide. The transition metal porphyrin catalyst may be transition metal phthalocyanines, transition metalloporphines and the like. The transition metal itself may be iron, manganese, cobalt and mixtures thereof. Suitable ligands include, but are not limited to imidazoles and lithium borate. Other useful additives include alkali metal perchlorates, such as sodium perchlorate, iodosylbenzene and alkali metal superoxides, such as potassium superoxide, and phase transfer catalysts such as tetrabutyl ammonium bromide.

Methyl formate is removed from propylene oxide by treatment with a selected base such as sodium hydroxide in water and glycerol. Selected inert salts may be added. The rate of methyl formate hydrolysis by selected bases was increased to commercially acceptable levels by addition of the glycerol. The glycerol and inert salts reduced the amount of residual water in the propylene oxide.

Provided herein are moist towelettes useful for cleansing, among other things, hard surfaces and human skin. The moist towelettes of the invention comprise a towelette portion which is moistened with a liquid composition of matter wherein the liquid composition includes an alkylene carbonate as one of its components. According to one preferred form of the invention, the liquid composition from which the towelettes are made moist are alcohol-free. In another embodiment, a substantial portion of the alcohol in a given formulation is replaced with an alkylene carbonate component. Preferred alkylene carbonate components include propylene carbonate, butylene carbonate, and glycerine carbonate.
